Live on cheap groceries. Use half the amount of laundry detergent per load - still cleans fine. Wash dishes and use cloth towels instead of buying alot of paper products. Drink more tap water and less pop. Watch what's on TV and don't go out as much. |

Try to find cheap but fun things to do.
When you go places take only as much cash as you will need. This will limit your impulse purchases. Concentrate on reducing your expenses on items that you regret spending on after the fact. Not only will this help you save, but it will also make you feel better about your use of the money that you do spend. |

Use the oldest rule of money - "Pay yourself first". This simply means taking 10% out of every paycheck first - for savings - and living on the rest. The best way to do this is to set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to a savings account. The transfer is automatic. You never get the 'chance' to spend the money.
And, of course, live within your means on the other 90%. Do not live on credit cards and do not spend the money in the savings account!

open a bank account that you can't draw out of with an atm card. then contact your bank and have them automatically transfer a certain amount (about $50-$100) into that account every time you get paid. you won't see this money in your normal bank account because it will go auto to the other bank account and by the time you forget about it, you'll have saved enuf to get that new plasma tv! |

Don't buy things you can't afford. If you don't have the money, don't buy it. Try not to use credit cards, they only get you in trouble. |

Never eat out. Cook from scratch (for example don't buy already prepared frozen burritos). don't have furniture - sleep/sit on the floor. Don't get cable. Work close by so there's no expense for driving or two cars. don't buy things retail. basically don't buy anything except food and toilet paper. don't even go to stores-you will see things you think you need. go to garage sales if you absolutely need something.
don't run the air conditioner cold in the summer or the heater warm in the winter. put on a jacket, even in the house. You get the idea. |
