Chriztina | How can you put money away into savings when you live pay check to pay check? |

Living paycheck to paycheck is another way of saying, " I spend all I make." Well, pretend you make $20 less every week and put that $20 away. Then, when you get a raise put the raise away every week. What you'll find is that most of us don't "need" half of the things we think we "need". Flat screens and manicures and cell phones and designer coffee and - well you get it. Set up a budget and stick with it. You'll be amazed how much money you can keep if you plan ahead and stop thinking that you "need" the "bling". |

Get into the habit of saving something every paycheck.
Even if it is only $5. You have to get into the habit of saving.
Your savings will slowly build, even if it's only $1 at a time. Remember, don't use your savings to pay for things then!!
Learn to make sacrifices to watch it grow. |

Start by writing down EVERY PENNY you spend for two weeks ... and see if there's anything you could do to reduce that amount. Do you eat out for lunch? Could you brownbag it and save money? Do you buy candy bars, or other treats that you could buy in large quantities and keep in the freezer?
Do you buy magazines that you could read for free in the library? These are just ideas ... you have to look at your own expenses and figure out where you are wasting money.
Another trick is to find a way to "trick" yourself into saving money. Throw all your spare change into a jar at night. Or every time you get a QUARTER, put it in a piggie bank. You'll be surprised how fast the spare change piles up. Then the trick is to keep from spending it!! |

The minute you get your paycheck, put some of it away somewhere you won't touch it unless you absolutely have to. That maybe in an envelope under your bed, or in a savings account. Put the same amount or more if you can away every paycheck. Do it first. Then pay everything else. It can be just $10 but something is better then nothing.
Reduce your expenses. If you have credit cards, cut them up and join a credit counselor company to pay off the dept at reduced minimum fee and interest rate.
Keep a detailed list of all the things you spend money on in a month. You may be surprised at how much some of it is costing you.
Get a raise. Or find other ways to earn income.
Check out the debtors anonymous website to see if you are a compulsive debtor. Even if your not, they may have ways to help you get your finances under control. |

As suggested, put away $5 per pay. Then add $1. every other month. You can also increase your federal tax so you'll get a bigger refund every year. I've been married 35 years and my wife & I still put money away . |

You have to find ways to reduce your spending. That extra pair of cute shoes, the nic nacks, the upscale shampoo, the stops at your favorite fast food place, whatever you can find to cut out these unneeded things. If you are honest with your self you will see that you don't really need these things. You can eat Campbells soup for lunch and I know I'd rather have a McDonalds lunch but you're trying to put some money away. The funny thing is when you finally do have some money put away you'll be in a better position to find a better paying job and not be so scared about leaving the one you have now. And the more you save the less desparate you become and success seems to follow. Goggle search "frugal living" for some really great ideas on saving money and getting by on less, there is a whole frugal movement thing going on in this country and it is growing all the time. There are some amazing stories to be found on some of the sites too. |

A couple thoughts.....
Keep careful track of your expenses for one month, writing down everything. Once you have done that, determine what expenses can be easily eliminated.
When you receive your paycheck, pay yourself first! In other words, put some money in savings.
If you company offers a 401(k) with a match, at least put in the amount of the match.

Start by putting a very small amount away each pay period, and then increase that amount on weeks where expenses are typically lower, such as after you pay bills. After time, if you find that you can afford to put away more, do so. You may also find it necessary to give up on certain non-necessities, such as for paying for other leisure activities (which may include that fancy satellite dish or paying extra for premium cable packages. |

The only thing I can think of is to have the money taken directly out of your account on pay day and put into an RRSP or something, that way you won't miss it. |
