For me.

1. I took a second job working behind a bar at a weekend
2. Stripped everything out of the budget I didn't need which included cycling to work in the summer months. magazine subscriptions, Starbucks coffee, luxury items etc.
3. Went through every bill and tried to get it cheaper by switching suppliers and negotiating discounts (most insurance companies will do that upon renewal it can be as much as 30%)
4. Transferred all my debts onto an interest free credit card where possible and cut all the rest up.
5. Sold everything that I didn't need DVD's CD;s Old books, stuff from my garage anything.

It was hard but worth it - I still switch my utilities bills every year and squeze my insurence companies but that is out of habit not because I need to.

Good luck if it is you that needs to sort something out.

The formula is basic: reduce your spending and increase your income - second jobs, whatever.

I became a member of this company online that I shop from and they are helping me pay off my debt.

1. Destroyed the credit cards. That way any possibility of temptation was removed.
2. Worked loads of overtime.
3. Gave myself a minimal weekly budget, and stuck to it, even when it meant I went hungry occasionally.
4. Paid every debt off as quickly as possible.
5. Never again, so far it's been over 20 years, borrowed to buy anything.
6. Always pay cash. As I part with folding money it feels like a greater amount than the odd occasion when I do issue a cheque. The thought of parting with large amounts of it usually makes me think twice. Sometimes that second thought stops me buying whatever it might be, and when it does I have rarely regretted it.
7. Refused all subsequent offers of credit cards, overdraft facilities and loans.

More savings & less expenses.
Don't spend excessive.
Have simple but nourished meals.
Bring your own water to drink.
No entertainments like movies or shows.
Exercise instead.
Get yourself promoted & salary increment.
Never never use your credit cards and not paying the credit payment.

I had debt of about $20,000 when I contacted Care One Credit. They got most of the interest rates on my credit cards knocked down significantly. My BOA credit card went from 23% to 0%!! They consolidated my debt into one monthly payment. I cut up all my credit cards and started paying cash for everything. Any extra money I could save I put into an account at ING direct so I didn't have easy access to it. I made payments for about two years and then when I had enough saved I used the money in my savings to completely pay off all my credit card debt. I have only two credit cards today and I still believe that paying in cash is the way to go. Don't get caught up with the credit card offers with no interest for 12 months. This is what got me in trouble!

I saw the Citizens Advice Bureau people.I was too far in debt to work out a satisfactory deal with people i owed money too,so they suggested bankruptcy as the only alternative.
I don't recommend this solution unless it is the only option as it screws up your credit rating for many many years.

Worked extra hours to pay them off. You can also go to Citizens Advice Bureau and they will help you for free

Put together a budget, and put that budgeted money into an envelope, lets say x dollars for groceries, x dollars for gas, x dollars for entertainment. You can only spend that amount of money, and make it a game to spend less. When you make your budget, make sure you are heavily paying down debt.

Getting a second job may help with this as well.

If your debts were taken out before April 2007 then there is good chance you can legally clear them. This is real and people in UK are doing it all the time.

This relates to the Consumer Credit Act 1974 to which the lenders did not pay enough attention and are now literally paying the price.
