I stole the diamond broach off the neighbors cat and sold it at a pawn shop. Then I told the cops my other neighbor stole it and they put him behind bars (I never liked the guy anyway).

But seriously, I just got done playing the game that finance gurus tell you not to do. I inherited over $100k but instead of paying off my credit cards, I used the interest on the money to pay down the debt. I would get zero interest rate credit cards and transfer the balance of a current card. When the zero interest credit was about to run out, I'd get another one and transfer the balance. I did this for two years and am now debt free (and I still have my $100k). There aren't many zero interest rate cards around anymore that don't at least charge you a fee for transfering a balance, but you can still find some if you look around (a friend of mine got one just a couple of weeks ago). Of course that assumes you have good credit. People will tell you that it will hurt your credit, but that's BS as long as you're not applying for a zillion cards (I only ended up applying for three over a two year period and my credit rating was just fine...I have an identity theft service that shows me my FICO scores once a month, and it didn't impact them at all).

Don't do credit counseling services. They are looked at as filing bankruptcy and it will hurt your FICO score.

Sure, here's what I did:

I took my monthly actual income and divided it into four parts; house, utilities, savings/debt, other bills. The rent and insurance went into the house section, utilities and grocery went into the second section; the third section is obvious. The fourth included things like car payments and insurance, school lunches, stuff like that.

Then I made my lifestyle fit my budget. I found that I was paying $150 more in rent than my budget allowed; we moved and it helped. I had to do some reduction of grocery money too.

Regarding the getting out of debt, once I'd made a serious practical and fair budget, I wrote each of the debts I had and told them how much I owed, how much I was going to pay (I had a set amount I could send out from my budget) and requested that all further communication be through email or written form. That got them to stop calling for the most part.

They weren't happy, but I even sent a copy of my budget to them and they had to admit it was the best I could do. And if they ever do decide to take you to court, you can show proof that you are trying, that you are being fair to your creditors, that you are making payments. You just aren't able to pay what they want you to pay lol.

I also learned how to not only cut coupons but actually save the money I saved for my own rainy day. I'd save something like $20 in coupons at the grocery store, and instead of paying the reduced amount with my debit card, I'd pay the full amount and keep the savings in cash. It actually adds up after a few months lol.

Getting out of debt is a long term commitment I'm working on it myself. The first thing you need to do is make sure you make your payments on time EVERY month. That is the only way to get your FICO score up. Even if it's the minimum but they must be on time. It's the only way to get leverage with the credit companies.

I put all my bills online through my bank so every month my bills get paid on time automatically so I dont have to worry about anything except making sure that I have enough to cover the current bills.

When you get your FICO scores up, or if yours isnt too bad already, you will be able to call each and every credit card you own and ask them to lower your rate. That’s the leverage I was talking about earlier. If they say there’s nothing they can do for you then you ask to speak to a supervisor. If you aren’t able to get it lowered then wait a few weeks then try again. Keep trying. Once I get my card lowered to 0% for 6 months. That doesn’t happen very often. Usually they only go down a bit but it helps.

Now since your FICO score has gone up you will be receiving offers from your credit cards to transfer balances at a great rate. Some even waive the 3% transfer fee if you ask for it on the phone. The best ones are the “until paid in full”. You must keep on top of it though. If you get a good rate for 6 months when the 6 months is almost up transfer it to another card at a better rate. But be sure that they don’t have a transfer fee or calculate to see if the transfer fee is less that the amount you’d pay in interest for the period of time they’re offering. If you’re going to pay more then it’s not worth it and try another card.

I also keep track of my credit card accounts online. I check my balances and see what charges I have on my account. If you have had a card for a long time and you’ve been paying it on time for a while but for some reason you’re bill was paid late this month-now you have a late fee on your bill. You can call the card company and explain your situation and they will remove that fee as a courtesy. They wont do it often but if you have leverage they understand that sometimes mistakes happen. Those fees do add up so don’t let them charge you. Take the time to call even if it’s a month or two later - it a difference in your bill. I usually send them a message online and they take care of it.

I hope I’ve helped you. GOOD LUCK.

depends on how big of a debt you are talking about.

If it is a 5 digits, i say you should just work it off.
If it is a 6 digits, than I suggest you start learning how to invest and learn how to use debt to your advantage to make more money.

If it is a 7 digits, I have no advice on that one.

1. Try first to talk reasonable to the people you owe, to set up a lower interest rate and a payment plan.
2. Go on a financial diet, until you pay of the debt. You would be amazed, how little money you need to live a live of quality.
Here some ideas:
a. Rent a smaller place, or rent, if you own.
b. Buy a small old car, getting lots of miles to the gallon
c. Get out of all unnecessary monthly obligations, like Internet, TV, Blockbuster, Netflix, etc
d. Throw your cell phone away
e. Spend your free time reading books from the library for free, instead drinking beer in a bar, $5,00 a pop.

I had a friend, who lived for 8 years on muesli and yogurt, he was 6'4", healthy like a horse and looked like a linebacker

Good luck (Spending is a powerful drug)

IF your debts are unsecured then go for an IVA. If you have a mortgage and enough equity you could remortgage the debt on to the house and extend the term of the mortgage. This is a drastic move but if it keeps your head above water then you need to do it.

Marcus
After 7 years the debt will drop off from your credit report. If you can, just pay $10 per month and wait for them to offer you a payoff amount.

I would say bankruptcy chapter 7that is because it wipe the slate clean. yeah it may be on our credit report for 7 years but the debt is gone.

there are lots of non-profit consolidation places, put your bill together, they make the cars, usually cutting your % interest and payments in half, make one payment a month to them, they distrubute it, keeps you out of collections, etc..
