Richard | How do I cash a check if I don't have a bank account? |

... at the bookstore?
or if nothing else works, go to a "check-cashing" place .. usually found in poorer parts of town ... where people more often do not have checking accounts .. it will cost you a cerain percentage of the check, but if absolutley needed, it's an option |

Go to the bank where the check is drawn on and try to cash it there. Since you don't have a bank account with them, they will most likely charge you a check cashing fee. You might also see if your college bookstore will take it. |

For cashing a check, you don't need to have a bank account. |

I will cash it for you. I will give you seventy five cents on the dollar and I will need to hold the cash until the check clears. OK?
Open a bank checking account. Deposit the check into it and use your temporary checks to get your books. When your check clears you can close the account and take the rest of your cash or continue to use the account and cash a check made out to cash at the bank when you must use cash or get a debit card to use as cash.
Do not carry or use cash. Once it is stolen or spent it is gone and you have no record of what you did with it. Use the bank. Most banks will give you a free student checking account. Use it, it is well worth the price. |

I would go for a checking account. I know Bank of America offers free checking accounts for five years for students. It's a lot safer than carrying around a bunch of cash. After the five years you have the option of using direct deposit which makes your checking account free for as long as you use it. There is no minimum balance on the account. You only have to have $25 to open the account. There is no fee to open the account. After this you won't have to worry about where to cash checks ever again. You also get a check card so you can have the option of buying your books online, possibly at a lower price. |

You can open an account and deposit your cheque, then once the cheque has cleared you are free to take out all the money and close the account. |

Well you have two options - you could cash it at the bank it was written on or you could go to a check cashing place (although they usually charge 1%-3%). Other than that I really can't think of any other options for you. Oh wait I got another idea??? Walmart cashes checks at the customer service area, oh and so does Safeway.. so there is four options, I hope that one of these works for you, I know books are expensive. |

The bookstore may cash it. If it's possible, you can try the bank that the check is drawn from. But on campus, you may be able to get that check cashed since it's from a grant. Also try the college's business office. |
