How do I cash an out of state personal check written by my father in law?We live in NYC and check is from FL?
My wife and I both recently moved here from NC and thus both have NC ID cards. The bank is Bank of America. Thanks in advance fro any replies.

western union really isn't the best solution. I used to be a western union agent, and all they will do is cut you another check, and you'll be in the same boat.

other stores and check cashing places won't touch it, trust me.

if you have an active account with Bank of America, they will take ot for you, though you will have to wait a few days for the check to be verified. if you can live without the money for a few days, wait until you get your NY ID, and then you'll have no trouble.

Ahem, go to any Bank of America branch in NYC and present two VALID forms of identification and cash the check. Note: You will be required to provide a thumbprint when cashing the check, in case the check is not negotiable.

Voila!

Go to the bank in which the check was written. (Bank of America) since your father in law has an account there they will be able to cash it.

2nd option - go to Amscot they will cash out of state check (but there will be a fee)

coollady141974
Just go to a branch, show your id and cash the check. The benefits of having a national bank is that they can check his balance at that time so it's either in there and they cash it, or it's not and you save on bad check fees. There's many B of A accounts in NYC. In the future, you should open a B of A account so he can transfer money into your account without fees.

you will have to deposit it and wait until it clears or you could tear the check up and ask him to wire the amount through western union

This isn't as big of a deal as you think. Go to a bank you have an account with. If you have matching funds in your account, you can cash it. Otherwise, you'll need to deposit it. Depending on the amount of the check, the bank may put a hold on it. According to Regulation CC, because it is a non-local personal check, they can put a hold on the funds for a maximum of 5 days, and give you $100 the next business day after you deposit it. If it's over $5000, they may hold it for up to 9 days. If they have any reason to believe that the check will not be paid, they can put an exception hold on for an additional two days.
If you do not have an account in New York yet, go to a Bank of America branch...they may be able to cash it for you, even though the check is from Florida. They should be able to access all Bank of America accounts, no matter what state they're from.

presumably, you'll eventually get an account.
open one, and deposit the check.
they'll put a hold on it for a week, until they're sure that they'll get their money.

i certainly don't recommend a check cashing company.
doesn't make sense to make them richer.
or give them money from your father-in-law.

in addition, look for a bank that doesn't charge you for the account.
unless, of course, you're rich, and it doesn't really matter.

lorraine12937
cash it at the bank where you do business now ,
if you have savings and checking there will be no problem

airbob61@verizon.net
If you already have a bank account there will be no problem cashing at your bank.

Check in the phone book for a Bank of America near you. They'll take care of it.

call and ask him to wire cash, because you can't cash check; if you know someone there with a bank account, they could go with you, and bank will sometimes cash out that way...

penpallermel
You can cash a check, no matter what state it comes from, at a bank you have an account with.
