Rookie | How do I get a credit card, and what are the requirements to get one? |
I'm 19 and don't have a job, will they still let me have one? I'm going to Chicago (for educational purposes) but don't have the money to get there. I'll be going in Febuary. Will I be approved for a credit card?
Also, I don't have a job right now but I am looking for one. I've applied at several different places, called them etc. I'll have a job eventually, but I don't know if I'll have one before February. Additional Details i'm not moving to chicago, just staying there for a week. |

Wow, so many negative answers. Try the cards listed on this page:
http://www.fastcreditcardoffer.com/credit-card-search/category/student/default.aspx
Look for the ones that say "No Minimum Income or Cosigner Required"
Good luck and enjoy your trip to Chicago. |

Hmmm... The credit Card is an easy way to get into real debt. Check out what your college has to offer you. Pell grants, scholarships... etc. I f you really need a credit card, They'll offer you one after you file for a student loan. Interest rates will be pretty high. I would avoid them as much as possible. |

Getting that first credit card can be a challenge, specifically with you not having any kind of job (the promise of a forthcoming career after school isn't good enough here). The credit card company will require some kind of proof that you are a safe bet and/or security that they will be paid back for your purchases. There are several options you could explore ...
Ask the credit card company about co-signers on a card (i.e. someone who will be responsible should you default on your payments ...). Usually the easiest co-signer is a parent.
Another idea is to apply for a department store credit card first and settle for a small card maximum (you might be lucky to get $500.00 on this, but it's a start). Use that department store card (it's not going to do you any good sitting in your kitchen drawer) and pay it off in full and on-time. Even in a couple of months, you'll be in a better position to apply for a Visa or Mastercard.
And one other option would be to apply for a line of credit with your bank. This works very similiar to a credit card. The bank will extend your credit to some amount and charge you monthly interest. Just make sure you don't abuse that credit; make regular payments and don't just pay off only the interest every month ... it is far better to actually cut into the principle (i.e. the money you actually owe ...). |

If you do get approved for one, you probably wont get one with a high enough limit to move. Most likely around 500 dollars. But with no credit history and job it will be very challenging. My best advice is just save up as much as you can when you do have a job, or when you get a job, you can apply for credit cards online, and get a decision within a minute. |

you need a job and work history to even get one on the net |

Without a job they will not give you credit because there will be no way to pay back the debt. You should wait until you have a job before you consider a credit card. |

Get a student card. Even if your not going to that college....I really don't think they check up on you....at least they haven't closed my account or denied me yet :o) Chase has a good one - you can apply online. And if you bank with wellsfargo you could apply for their student card...i dont think you can if you don't already bank with them. Just don't let your credit get out of hand! |

Had this question been asked five or ten years ago most people would have thought there was something wrong with you.Credit cards were coming through the mail from all parts of the country. As for the senario you offered, without a job, without earnings and without carfare to Chicago, you present a profile of a poor risk. One very seldom bets on " Maybe". |
