The best book I ever read about budgeting and finance was Suze Orman's book Young Fabulous & Broke. She tells you how to make the most of what money you have, and how to avoid spending money on things that you don't need. She also has chapters that explain the stock market, investments, etc. I think you will learn many different ways to work with what you have.

As far as extra money goes, other people have made some good suggestions. Good luck!

If you have a skill use it, or you can probbaly invest the money that you have in the bank and use the interest that you acrue to help defray your present expenses.

Money market at over 5% should be your first short term goal
Right now the market is volitile so I wouldn't recommend that to a novice.
I don't know if you rent or own a house. I would recommend sharing living space with another single mother to cut expenses and save at a faster rate.

If you don't own a house you should work towards buying one.
If you do own a house you should work towards buying a 2 family.

We are teachers - all four of us. My husband retired 2 years ago, I retire this year, and my son and his wife are teaching 4 years.

First of all, get a TSA where you work. For every $10 that they put away from your check, it only *costs* you about $70 - the rest would have been eaten up by taxes anyway. So, start NOW. Even if you can only put in a little bit - it will add up over time.

Get an IRA - that is POST-tax income. Also will add up - even if yo only put in a tenny bit.

Start educational accounts for your children. When you set up your TSA, the financial planner will assist you and advise you. You Union should be a big help.

Check about your exemptions, too. You should NOT plan on getting a big tax refund - you should either PAY, or come out even. That way, you can USe your money all year - just PLAN on paying taxes.

Get fee-free credit cards that pay you cash back. You can also start a U-promise account for your kids - when you buy groceries, a little bit goes into accounts for them.

MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS GET GREAT GRADES!! Convince them that a scholarship is like a basketball signing bonus - they will get rewarded with THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS if they have skills. High grades are woth more towards college that flipping burgers for minimum wage.

You are VERY SMART to plan for your future! Also, watch the Suze Orman show, and red her books - she is ALL ABOUT women taking care of themselves and their family finances.

this is what i do for extra money i use a site called treasuretrooper.com, where you pretty much answer surveys and participate in free trials. It's been a few days and i already made $28.85, if anyone is interested (you have to be at least 13 years old, credit card isn't required, seeing as how i don't have one), go to:

http://www.treasuretrooper.com/302638......

that's my referral link, you make 20% of the earnings of people you refer!

Any of the teacher "stuff" that you are not using could be sold--Amazon. Perhaps Ebay, but they have a policy about not listing Teacher Editions--that doesn't seem to affect Teacher Resources.

I used to tutor at my school and eventually in my home afterschool.

Be sure you make a budget and stick to it. Try NOT to use credit cards and carry a balance--then you are just throwing money away in interest. If you carry a balance, set yourself up to get that paid down and off.

Do you rent? Perhaps looking into buying a home or condo so you can write off the interest on your taxes. Often owning is less expensive than renting (at least as far as the monthly payments and tax benefits).

Try to buy less NEW and more USED. Be a bargain hunter. Goodwill, Salvation Army, Consignment stores, and Liquidation stores have brand name clothing and other products at a fraction of the new price.

Two other resources:

Tightwad Gazette is a book that has been out for a long time. MANY helpful hints on expense cutting. You can get that used also--an older version may be a good way to start.

www.crown.org is a Christian-based financial awareness and informational website that helps everyday people manage their finances so that their money will work for them.

I hope that helps. You have a lot on your plate! If you can, keep your own kids and your students as the main focus and try not to let your worries affect them.

**I just thought of one more thing...
When you spend money, make a conscious thinking habit of these 3 questions:

1. Is this really a need or just a want? Can I live without it for another day? If so, then it is probably a want (even for the little things that are impulse buys)
2. Is the item an investment or an immediate depreciation? Sometimes we really need things even if they are an immediate depreciation of their value. However, it makes me stop and think about whether I really want to put my money there.
3. How long did I have to work to pay for this? Whatever your gross salary is, cut that into fourths for taxes and fixed expenses like rent and utilities. What is left should be divided down to an hourly amount. Then you'll know how long you work for something. All of a sudden a shirt for $30 seems like a lot of work!

Kabu
Maybe you could tutor in your home in the evenings/weekends.

As a teacher you should have access to a 403b plan. In many cases the school system matches your contribution to a certain percentage. Make contributions to at least get all of the matching funds. You'll never get a better return. With excess funds look for a fund such as the Vanguard Target Retirement for your situation.
