How do I get on my feet?
I'm going to be 18 in a few months and I want to move out, but I'm working a minimum wage job and I live in Los Angeles. How can I get on my feet so I don't get into debt like my mother?

Are there any programs I should try?

1.Spend your money on NOTHING but the necessities.

2. Save your money until you have enough saved back that you could live on your own for 8 months, BEFORE you move out.

3. Budget your expenses, and learn what you will be in for BEFORE you get head-first into it.

4. Discipline, discipline.. discipline

5. Never forget the first 4 things just explained to you....

Save the Animals
Get insurance!! Then get a another side job like at night work at McDonalds or Burger King or something that money can go for thingd like food and soap and personal needs and your big job you can use that for whatever bills you have to pay & your new house!!

You may not be able to afford living on your own on minimum wage. You will probably need at least one roommate, and you need to make sure your roommate is trustworthy and financially responsible. Don't be ashamed to stay with your mom to save the money you need to launch yourself.

The best way to stay out of debt is to create a budget and stick to it. Don't look for a free lunch or the easy way to make big money - these are all gimmicks designed to appeal to people with little money to rob them of the little money they have.
Don't get a credit card. It is far to easy to overspend and get into debt with a credit card. Use cash for as much as you can, and checks/debit card for the rest.
Create a budget you can live with, and stick to it. Assign the money you earn to your expenses at the beginning of the month, and develop the self-control to stick to those amounts.

Also, get down to your local library tonight and start checking out personal finance books - they can be wonderfully empowering and inspiring, and most are written in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
Some good, easy reads:
-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Personal Finance in your 20s and 30s
-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money
-“Smart Women Finish Rich” or “The Automatic Millionaire”, by David Bach
-any Suze Orman books

Anything that will get you a better job.

Seriously, you're 18 and already a min. wage job isn't enough. That's because no one is supposed to stay in a minimum wage job. It's just a place to start.

So first and foremost figure out what you think you want to do for a job, then back into what you need to do it. After that, go for it.

As for avoiding getting into debt, it's easy to have everything you want - as long as you don't want very much. When you're earning your own money and you need it to live on you'll be surprised how easy it is to want less.

Good luck kid.

get into a relationship with christ, maybe find a good church that preaches from the BIBLE. If you cant find one then you need to have a personal relationship with christ alone, and trust him with everything in your life; friends, finance, home, and etc. I dont expect you to take this seriously, but if you do then this decission will not only give you an abudant life, but you will be allowed into heaven when you die. Due to family emergency I had to leave SDSU, my own apartment and all my friends and I loved SD. But then I found Jesus and I cant describe it to you, but its by far the greatest experience I have been apart of. So take this advice however you want, but one day you will have to accept that jesus is real, and that he had the perfect life for you onlt if you allowed him to be part of it. God Bless and may you see the truth.

Join the Army. You will still get minimum wage but with the addition of free room, board, medical care and rifle practice.

The best thing you can do is get a college education so you can find yourself a good job. Community College is extremely affordable in CA so I would suggest starting there. After you complete a 2-year Associate's degree you can transfer to a 4 year state school (also affordable in CA) to complete a Bachelor's degree.

Good luck!

There are no such programs, otherwise everyone would apply for them.

First thing would be not to think of moving out, as with minimum wage you too will be like your mom or worse. Help your mom (pay some money for expenses/bills for your stay with her) and save the rest. Work two or three places and save few thousand dollars and then join some college and get some degree work only one job during this time.

Once you complete some degree your chances to get a good job increase exponentially and after 3 months in a professional job you can move out.

The above thing requires 3 years of sacrifice and dedication but another option would be to join armed forces if you like what they do and are not sacred of dying based on battles currently going on a posting there is guaranteed.

wind
dont move out yet..help you mother out first thats the first step on getting on your feet.
