rec | How do YOU save? |
I'm wondering what works best for you (and/or your family) when it comes to saving money.
My husband and I just had a newborn, and we've always been alright at saving. Now that we are a 'family' I'd like to save more.
Just curious. |

I don't spend. I buy very little and do very little. I don't own a car, a cell phone, I live with my parents so I don't pay any bills, etc.
Once you realize that all of the materialism of the world means nothing and you don't need any of that stuff, it's pretty easy.
Just turned 21 and I've saved about $40,000. |

having the bank automatically transfer a portion of your paycheck to a savings account works pretty well |

Just open a saving account and treat it like a bill and pay it every time you get paid. My wife and I have been doing it for 35 years. |

We put extra into the mortgage, which has a redraw facility. That way, we keep our interest costs down, and have access to the money in an emergency. We're both working, but I'm the only one with a permanent job, so my partner could be unemployed at any time.
I also have $100 a month taken from my savings account by direct debit and invested in a managed fund, taking advantage of low unit prices at the moment. This is a long term investment, and I just keep a couple of thousand invested just in case we get into difficulty and need extra funds.
I have my employer pay part of my wage into the saving account, from which the mortgage and direct debits are drawn, and the rest into another spending account, which I use to cover the bills, fuel, and groceries. I always pay any extra from this account onto bills, so I'm ahead in the payments. |

Have a savings account that automatically transfers the money each time you get paid. I have $500 taken out of my checking account every two weeks on the same day that I get my pay check direct deposited. That way I never miss the money, because it was only in my account for a matter of hours! |

Very simply you need to spend less than you make. Then you are saving.
More deeply there you need to earn more and spend less.
Earnings are typically kind of fixed. Unless you can work overtime, get a second job or get a better job.
On the spending side, eat out less, turn back the thermostat in the summer and winter, drive less taking public transportation or combine car trips. Drink less, plus it's better for you. Cut down on your pay cable channels if you have cable. But necessities in bulk. Don't buy non-essentials. Downsize your cars. Fewer or closer vacations. There's tons of ideas. Good luck! |

PAY YOURSELF FIRST...If you try to save whatever's left of your paycheck, you'll never save anything because there's never any leftover. Take a predetermined amount right off the top & put it into a savings account. Don't even think about it. You won't really miss it if you never had it and it will add up fast. |

It's great to have money taken straight from your paycheck. Also look into investing in a Money Market or CDs. The ones at credit unions are usually pretty good. There's no risk in either.
Let's say you have $10,000. Based on the current rates at my local credit union, here's what you could expect in the different accounts:
Savings: 1.19%
Money Market: 2.28%
13-month CD: 3.2%
Check with your bank first to see what their policies are about pulling out the money from each account if you run into an emergency and need it.
Good luck!! |

It helps to have disposable income that isn't needed to pay for life's necessities. If your situation is that you have disposable income, consider direct deposit to a savings account (out of sight, out of mind) and invest in a 401k, especially if your employer offers matching.
If your definition of saving is more oriented toward trimming expenses, look at what you are spending your money on each month and decide what you can live without. Expensive cable packages, cigarettes, dining out, and cell phones are examples of areas where most people can cut back (or eliminate) and see significant savings.
I check my local grocery store ad on-line and make a list before I go. I intentionally stock up on items that are on sale (only the ones I regularly use though) and try to put off buying at full price. The internet is a great place for both recipes and instruction on how to cook meat, vegetables, etc. that you might not have worked with before. Plan a menu and incorporate the sale items for the week to take advantage of what's discounted.
Good luck! |
