I recently loaned someone a large amount of money. I know that it is a bad policy to do money with friends. I have learned a valuable lesson and will never do it again. At present, the money has not been given back to me two months later. I suppose I could go to small claims court, but instead it may just be my way out never to have to loan out another solitary dime. What do you think community. |

if the person is unable to repay a large sum...then have them pay installments. it's easier to repay in small amounts then one lump sum.
if you plan to take them to court...you will need witnesses or something in writing or the borrower admitting to the debt.
if you have none of these...then your chances are VERY SLIM of winning in court. Small Claims court can only go up to 5,000.
I will buy a receipt book...and have the guy pay you a couple of hundreds of dollar...and make him sign the receipts. and say that you would like to keep proof that HE paid you back. make sure to write how much he paid you...and the balance. |

You just tell them you have a strict rule and don't lend money to anyone and that's that! If they want to let their feelings get hurt, oh well! Better for them to feel hurt, than for you to empty your wallet! |

Just be 'broke' whenever someone puts the squeeze on you.
It works for me.

There is a joke that when a friend asked a hot dog vendor for a loan, the vendor replied the he was not allowed make any more loans because he made an agreement with the bank that he would agree not to make loans if they agreed not to sell hot dogs.
Of course, the vendor knew that the bank was not going to sell hot dogs anyway, and the deal was just a way to avoid making loans.
I do not know what you do for a living, but there is probably a bank that does not do the same thing and would be willing to make a non-compete deal with you. |

It's a harsh lesson. I'd just let it go as that. Next time just say "sorry, no" or "sorry I can't"
If they bring up your friendship just let them know you still want to be friends but you don't loan money. |

Just say no. If they are hurt, it's a matter of their emotional immaturity. If they care about you, they will respect any answer, good or bad. Don't allow someone else's guilt trip to stop you from protecting yourself. |

I think loaning money is not a good idea. With my family, I give what I can afford if they are having a problem. No loans. No loans to anyone
I was tanken terrible advantage of by a friend who begged me when she was going into foreclosure on her home. I loaned her all I had, my total life savings and she never paid back a dime.
i live on a social security disability check and have nothing . I wound up losing my home and most of my belongings which would not have happened if she kept her word and paid me back as she promised to do. |

Personally I never loan $. I learned that the hard way. So, a way of saying "No" would be " I was just about to ask you to borrow money" jokingly. |

I'm in a similar position. It's not a HUGE sum of money but it sucks nontheless. I wouldn't go to court unless it was thousands of dollars, I would talk to my friend and let them know that you've been very patient waiting to be paid back, but it's taking too long and arrangements need to be made. Even if they can't pay all of it back at once, draft a contract for a certain amount each month until it's paid off. If they fall thru on the contract, then go to court, because you'll have a leg to stand on. Good luck!! =) |
