ny | How do you distinguish you needs from your wants? |
They say that you should buy only what you need, and never what you want. How to distinguish them? I went to the supermarket, and in the clothes section they sold socks. Thick, with a turned on top, deep cherry colour... I immediately wanted them, because my feet are so cold in winter, and I thought I'd wear them around my place (I wear socks, never slippers). I didn't buy them, and now can't stop thinking about them. So, do I need them or do I want them? I would not have wanted them if I didn't see them; if I buy them I will wear them and keep my feet warm. Are they my need or my want?

I have other socks, my they are short, thin and cotton, and there are thick. And my feet are constantly cold. |

It is for comfort, so the socks are a want. If they were to prevent frostbite, they would be a need.
A need is different from a want because without the needed thing you will suffer. But, if you don't get somethign that is merely a want, then you will not suffer, you will just be denied enjoyment. |

Clothing, food, and shelter are all needs.
It does get a little fuzzy tho between needs and wants tho.
Everyone needs clothing, but some want to buy designer brands because the will look good. They are satisfying a need, and satisfying a desire for a pleasant appearance.
I say if you have cold feet, you need warmer socks. And I think it boils down to value.
Are they well made socks? Will they last for a while and continue to keep your feet warm for a long time? If so then you may not need to buy anymore socks for a long time!
And there is nothing wrong with buying something that satisfies both a need and a want! |

The best way I can determine a want from a need is to ask myself if I can manage without it. If I can do without it, it is a want...if I can't do without it, it is a need.
In your case, can you manage to keep your feet warm without those socks? If so, it's a "want" and you don't have to buy them. If however, your current socks just don't cut it and your cold feet are bothersome, then you could consider it a "need" and go ahead and purchase them. |
