Lock the money in your savings up in a CD so you can't touch it. |

I have 2 savings accounts at 2 different banks. One is my real savings, the money there is direct deposited from my check, and for the most part I ignore that account and act like it doesn't exist.
The other is my "rainy day" account, I deposit the excess from my checking account into it every pay period, and occasionally make large deposits into it to keep it replenished. When I want to buy something and need extra cash for it, this is the account i dip into. |

If you can't save the money you put away, then buy savings bonds |

I don't have to fight, there isn't any money in there right now. |

it just takes will power. Dont spend money on stupid stuff you dont need.
Keep the savings for something unexpected that might happen in the future. What if your car needs a new transmissions so you can get to your job? What if you get a speeding ticket? What if you need to bail your friend/family member out of jail? What if.........(insert possible senerio here)
Its never been a problem for me. Every time i take spending cash from my paycheck i take half of it and put in savings. You dont need to spend money to live happily. Just save it for what is important.
You could put your money somewhere where you cant take it out like a bond or something else of the sorts, there are tons of options on this. Talk to a bank if you are interested. |

Put it in a Certificate of Deposit for a few months (6 or 12 usually).
CD's earn really good interest if the money is kept in there for that period of time. Also, there's a penalty if money is withdrawn from the CD before the time period is over.
It's an excellent way to prevent the urge to withdraw saved money. |

It's hard to get started, and it takes will power to not draw money out. Start your savings account in a separate bank from your checking, so that the temptation isn't there to transfer from one account to another. If you are offered an atm card for the savings account, turn it down, so that the only way to withdraw funds is to go to the bank, not a satellite atm. Don't make it easy. I know someone who set his up in another town, more than an hour away, so that he would have to think before he drove all that way. He's saved over $100k (over 20 years) by leaving his accounts alone...... |

I don't even think about my savings account. When I calculate how much money I have for bills, rent and fun stuff I only look at my checking account. Whatever is in there is my money. The savings account only comes into play if it is an emergency. |

It's called will-power. If you ever hope to save money you'll have to grow some.
Beyond that, sure, open a CD or something. You could always lend it to someone with a high credit rating on prosper.com. |

Think about how long you will have what you are tempted to buy. Then think about how messed up this economy is and think about what the cost of living will be in ten years. Unless you're paying for bills, I'd forget I have a savings account. I separate my savings account from my checking. My savings is in a bank that is hard for me to get to. |

There are essentially two motivating factors that govern human behavior. One is pleasure, the second is pain. By taking the money out of your savings account to buy something immediately, you're giving yourself instant pleasure, but, if it comes at the expense of your future, it will ultimately lead to pain (such as an extended working career, borrowing money from friends and family, moving into a mobile home, eating large quantities of noodles, feeling powerless in situations that require you to have easily accessible capital, not being able to purchase birthday presents for your loved ones, checking out DVDs from the library where the selection is terrible, forgoing health insurance, eating food directly from a can, etc., etc.). The only way to end impulsive buys is to associate more pain than pleasure with buying things immediately. You can do this by rationalizing the future effects of all your purchases, and by taking pride in your ability to avoid the pitfalls that the mass of Americans cannot. The definition of power implies that the possessor of power has options available to him or her that others do not. If you do not recognize the choices you have when it comes to controlling your purchases (and other aspects of your life), you have no power whatsoever. Life will devolve into a series of things that simply "happen" to you.
The more one spends, the more income he or she has to generate. This income is often produced by means of employment at a large corporation, small business, or in the service of other individuals. All of these valid forms of business exist to impel regular people to give companies or individuals their money. This is most often achieved through effective branding -- either by word of mouth or by utilizing advertising. In both instances, companies must make their customers perceive a need for their goods. Contrast that with our basic needs for survival: caloric intake, water, rest, clothing, shelter, and heat. Many of the purchases that we make beyond those necessities are based upon our pursuit of suitable mating partners. Being in possession of things such as fine clothing, cars and vacation homes give us the appearance of success, which could convince our potential mates (on a very primal level) that our DNA is more preferable than the DNA of Person X. When deconstructed, cravings for things such as status, power, influence, experiences, etc., can all be reduced (on some level) to that lone act which our bodies have been created to do: reproduce (and subsequently raise offspring).
More often than we realize, the things that we believe we need to achieve status and desirability are generated for us by multi-million dollar marketing companies. These are places where many of the employees are paid to understand areas of study such as human psychology, philosophy and sociology (and that's not to mention a cadre of other more traditional business tools such as focus groups, surveys and studies that help determine the forms for the products that we buy). Keeping these factors in mind helps us to separate necessities from frivolous purchases, thereby keeping the balances in our savings accounts higher than $0. When that happens, our desirability goes up, but so too does our feeling of well-being. |

Delay any purchase you are considering for at least 48 hours before deciding to buy anything. If you are serious about saving, this will work quite well. If you still make the buy after the 48 hours, then you must have made a well thought out decision about the purchase. |

I don't think its always necessary to keep savings in the savings account. If I see an item I was going to buy, but it happens to be on sale this month, I will dip into my savings and buy the item.
However, I will make sure that on my next paycheck, I pay back the money I took from my savings.
I find the best way to not use money from your savings is to create a budget and stick with it. Limit the number of times you stop by the mall or go out for dinners. Most impulse purchases are unnecessary. If you reduce the number of times you can be tempted, your desires to dip into your savings will also decrease. |
