It's easy for people to just say get a job but that just shows their ignorance of the welfare system. Most people on welfare do work. In most states it is mandatory that they work. Simply "getting a job" is not the answer because there are people who work 40 hours a week and are still in need of assistance. I would say evaluate what it is you like to do and turn it into a career. Take your time, enroll in a community college program and finish a certificate in a field that is going to pay you enough money to actually to maintain you while you continue your education finally going into the career that you want. That's what I did at least. I am now a Special Education teacher. |

Work or go to school. You must be ready to work or get educated, so you can get a decent job.
I was sent to college by the Illinois Dept of Public Aid from 1991 to 1994, and I utilized the system to help me get ahead. I asked public aid to help me go to College and got myself out of the welfare system. I was desperate. You have a desire and motivation to make something better of yourself. I know a lot of people on welfare were given the same opportunity I was and just were not motivated to get off welfare. They were just looking for an easy way out. Nothing in life is easy. You have to work hard and stay focused on the path.
Welfare makes it easy to sit on your rear end and whine. Get up and make a plan to have a better life and set and example for your children.
There were a lot of times when I was going to college, it would have been easy to quit. I had to get my 2 little kids up at 4 am to be at a clinical early in the morning in the middle of the winter. My 2 kids both were pre kindergarten. We survived and lived a better life because of sheer determination. |

By getting a good education first of all. Knowledge can get you far. Work hard in any job you have and climb the ladder. Save your money, don't squander it on silly things. Do without things like cigarettes, soda, fatty foods, junk foods, (these are unhealthy and use up your money). You need to change your thoughts too...have confidence in yourself and strive to be a better person by doing the right thing for yourself. |

Make something of your life. It's not just a job, it's an attitude. You need to have more self worth. I keep trying to encourage my father in law to get a job. Even being a greater at Wal Mart. But nooooo.... he keeps wasting his life away. You can do better.
Ask yourself, what do I want to say in 2 years: I wish I had... OR... I'm glad I did... |

I have helped people get off welfare. What you need to do is work hard to save about $200, then invest in a home business. You will find that you are meeting people all the time, learning so much and constantly making yourself better. I can help you set goals and achieve things you never thought possible for yourself. If you are ready to turn your life around, this is for you....and it's fun!!
Check out my site and see what it takes. |

Patience, prayer and perseverance. The fist step is to actually, genuinely and actively WANT to get off welfare. The welfare system, in any state, is a black hole. I used to be on welfare for several years (10+) and it was not until I got a job with the Department of Social Services that I made enough money to get off. I was fortunate that during the years I was receiving they still had programs to send you to school. Now, it's get a job or get cut off. But the jobs are minimum wage which reduces your benefits, meaning you use all your wages to make up the difference. It's a maddening and vicious cycle. If it had not been for my schooling which allowed me a better paying job, it would have been near impossible for me. If you have the opportunity to go to school while receiving, please, please consider it. It will so pay off in the long run. And, don't beat yourself up. I had to go back to receiving food stamps a few months ago because the father of my children stopped paying his child support. You do what you have to do. It is truly there to help. Just don't abuse it. It is possible to walk away from welfare. You really just have to get out of the "welfare mentality". And I don't say that in an offensive manner. I used to have that same mentality. Good luck. It can be done! |
