Miss. B | How do you survive on $10 an hour? |
So I have an associates degree but I only make $10 an hour. What injustice! Well I know I'm better off than others, but seriously how can you live on $10 an hour! |

Live within your means. Get a room mate. Drive an inexpensive car. One cheap on insurance. Don't eat out a lot. Pack your lunch for work. If you go out to a bar, have the men buy you all your drinks. |

make sure your bills and they way you spend your money, doesn't exceed the amount you are bringing in.... You may have to get a part time second job just for a few hours a week. |

There's no law or moral code that says just because you have some low-end job you are entitled to be rich. Someone offered you ten bucks to do some marginal job, and you voluntarily as a free human accepted that. That's all.
There is nothing unjust about that -- you are paid based on how productive your job is. An associates degree isn't worth much, does not set you apart from the mass of other job seekers, and is unlikely to put you in position to have a very productive job. Allow me to clear something up for you: in the real world, an associates degree means you only have half a college education. It's not really a degree.
If you want more money, quit whining and get the education or skills needed to make real money for yourself or someone else. |

You don't... And you aren't SUPPOSED to! It's not "injustice", it's common sense...
Having a High School Diploma or an Associates Degree or even a Doctorate is merely a way to show you have the intellectual capability to "cope" with a certain level of intellectual activity, it doesn't prove you have the stamina to do it in the real world.
Jobs that start at $10 an hour are supposed to be "training wheels" to hold you up while you prove to an employer that you can work hard, produce results, and get the job they want done, done! If you work hard at a $10/hour job for 3 months, someone will notice, and you will be offered a $15/hour job...and so on!
A salary of $20,800 ($10/hour) is, however, well above the official "poverty line", so theoretically, at least, you shouldn't starve while earning that little.
America is not a nation that will "smile on you" if you believe your circumstance is someone else's fault (even if it is!), but IS a place where people who "pull themselves up by the bootstraps" are almost always rewarded (whether they deserve it or not!)
So you might want to steer yourself away from believing an "injustice" has been done to you...
Best wishes...
P.S. If you work really hard for $10/hour (harder than those around you) for 3 months, and no-one notices, it's time to change employers! |

Dont squander it. Put away what you dont use to live and save it for when you may need it. Pay your bills on time, only buy what you NEED. Thats what I'd do anyway. =] |

It tough! Many American seem to have incomes that are not commensurate with their incomes nowadays. All you can do is budget and perhaps get a PT job (assuming that you don't have childcare issues). Also, if you can find a way to go back to school, get a healthcare job...like being a nurse or a radiology tech...they make decent money. Good luck! |

It depends on where you live and your lifestyle.......but $10 per hour is a tough place to be. You might consider another line of work, maybe a weekend job as well.
You also may want to consider applying for either a state or federal government job that offers great benefits. |

Well, maybe it depends on whether you have an entry-level job or not. Usually, you have to put up with that for about a year or so, then you can get raises/bonuses or look for a better paying job, and since you will have experience under your belt, you should have more asking power to get what you want.
In the mean-time, look in the newspaper ads for sales, clip sunday coupons, buy off-brands of the products that you usually buy if possible. They are the same thing, only cheaper.
*Shop at grocery stores like Shop n' Save and Aldie's. At Shop n' Save, if you look on the price tags, they will show you the price per ounce or per pound of any product you are buying. Go with whichever is lower.
*Buy at Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, and sometimes Walgreens has great prices on items if you look in their weekly ads!
*Go to a meat market for all your meat products and buy other things in bulk when you can. (Costco's, Sam's Club)
*If you want to go to a movie, go during a matinee and save tons of money that way. I also like to go to Wal-Mart to buy my candy for the movies and keep it in my purse. Dishonest? Maybe. But why pay $3-$4 for movie candy when I can get it for $0.88???
*Bring your lunch from home instead of eating out or going to the cafeteria. It's healthier too!
*Don't buy coffee or tea out everyday, buy coffee and tea at the grocery store and make it at home and take it with you wherever you go.
*Buy a 2-liter or 12pk cans of soda and use those instead of buying them at the gas station for $1.40 or more per bottle.
*If you want bottled water, buy a 24pk at a grocery store and keep them in the fridge to take with you instead of buying them for $1 or more for every single one.
*But most of all, KEEP TRACK OF YOUR EXPENSES!
*Use a notebook while your'e out to write down the price every single thing that you buy anywhere that you go. Go home and punch in all the info on something like Excel or Quicken on your computer.
Both programs should be able to provide you with charts to track your spending habits and from there you can modify your habits and spend your money on things that you NEED first. |

Watch your spending! It is possible to do, but you have to limit your pleasures. Like don't drink the $5.00 a day coffee, don't eat out alot, rent a movie instead of going to the theater, etc. I found that if you write down what you spend that will help you with your budget. You have to cut corners until you can afford not to. |

I'll answer your question

Work a lot, then look for other jobs in the meantime. Living with your parents is always an option. Or you can rob banks and run off to the grand caymans for the rest of your life drinking beer and walking around naked. |

Why dont you go back and get a Bachelors degree in teaching high school or K12? Teaching jobs are in great demand everywhere and they pay really well $20+/hr plus great benefits etc.
Sorry to sound redundant and preachy but Education is still the Key to making good money. |

It's tough, but do-able, depending on where you live.
Here are some thoughts on how to address the "big" expenses:
Rent: It's usually the biggest living expense. Consider roommates, or even living with your folks if you have to.
Food: Do not eat out. Pack lunch. Cook breakfast and dinner. It's not just cheaper but healthier. Rice and beans and whatever vegetables are in season are the cheapest and healthiest option. But in general, unless you're cooking steak all the time, cooking at home from scratch (not "convenience" foods) will always be cheaper even than McDonald's. When I had no money I mostly lived on peanut butter and banana sandwiches on whole wheat toast. It didn't taste bad, and it was super-cheap. That said, a big bottle of multi-vitamins would be a good investment.
Cheap recreation: You have to have fun, but there are cheap and expensive ways to do it. Hanging out with friends at home, going on walks, frisbee in the park, picnics, are all good options. Avoid going to bars -- you can have an awesome margarita party for a bunch of people at home for the same price as 2 drinks at a bar.
Avoid stores: The mall, and even stores like Wal-Mart can be dangrious temptations to buy stuff you don't really need. When you do go, write out a list beforehand. Edit it. Then do not buy anything that's not on your list.
Good luck to you! |

If you are unhappy with your current wage, setup a meeting with your boss to talk about a raise. If you really do contribute more than others and can outline where and how, you should be able to lobby effectively for a raise. And if you cannot get a raise, start looking for a new job. |

My husband and I survive off not much more than that, and we have money left over. Shop at Aldi Foods or a cheaper grocery store, buy clothes at thrift shops (they have a lot of nice things!) Look for great bargains on things you need by going online or waiting. Try to stay out of debt by buying a used car. Create a budget for each month so you know what bills you have to pay, and what you could have left over for fun things. |

I don't know where you live or what your profession is. I am in college now and before I quit my job and decided to go back to school I was making $11 an hour. I lived (and still do) in an apartment. I take the bus. I am 1 semester away from graduating with an associates degree. I know that this degree is nothing more than a stepping stone into a 4 year University. There is know way I would stop going to school now. You need at least a bachelors, a Masters and PhD is where the money is. I would seriously consider continuing your education.. It will be worth it. |

Try living in the UK - 10 bucks (or just over £5) is the minimum wage here, and EVERYTHING is a lot more expensive than the USA. |

$10?????? Wow. That's not very much. I think you will have to try to use a budget. I don't understand teachers though. They don't get paid much (my 5th grade teacher said that everyday, all day) but are very important to the community, in my opinion. If I ever become a millionaire I would donate to my school district as a child and hope that teachers would get paid more. I know I am off topic, I DON'T CARE!!!!!! MY FAVORITE THING IS SCHOOL! I AM CRAZY, I KNOW THAT! I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR MONEY PROBLEM THOUGH! SORRY!!!!!!! =) |
