How do you tell people that you won't loan them money?
Everyone at work knows that I have more money than them. We all make the same amount, but they blow all of it every week and I put some in the bank instead. All the time they ask if they can borrow money from me. I did it a few times (like $10 or $20), but they never pay me back, so I stopped. How do I keep turning them down without them getting mad at me? Keep in mind, I have to work with these people every day.

You say "Sorry but I don't loan money anymore".

If they ask why - you don't owe them an explanation. But if you have to just say "man I got my own bills to pay" and walk off.

You don't have to make up an excuse or reason. You don't owe them that.

Don't discuss money at work. There is no reason for them to know you have more money then they do. Just let them think you are living paycheck to paycheck just like them.

After you turn a few of them down...the word will get out that the bank of you is closed for business and they will bug someone else.

I have always had a never loan money approach. If I can't afford to give it to you as a gift with out expectation of repayment....then the answer is no.

One of the quickest ways to ruin friendships and family relationships is to loan money.

Just say you're short and you were about to ask if you could borrow from them. I once lent someone $10 before pay day which was the next day. When I ask for the money back, he doesn't remember me giving it to him. I won't repeat what I said next but he handed it over. It was a lesson well learned.

In Nancy Reagan's words, "Just say no"

People at work are your co-workers, not your friends. You may be friendly with them, but it is a courtesy.

I have loaned to and borrowed from co-workers in the past, and can tell you from my experience, as you now know from yours, that it is a bad practice. The problem is when you ask for re-payment you are a bill collector and everyone knows how collectors are thought of.

The other thing is to quit talking about how good you have it. The only reason that your co-workers know you have more money than them is because you told them.

BTW, $10 or $20 is a wonderful credit check.

Just tell them you're really sorry, but your accountant has put you on a strict allowance and you just don't have any spare cash.

Tell them all your extra cash goes into a retirement fund.

Just tell them no ... but if that doesn't work for you here's a few lines I have used successfully:

1. Sorry, but I'm helping a family member (brother/sister) financially and am on a strict budget - sorry!

2. I started putting my extra money into IRA's for retirement and have a limited monthly budget, sorry!

Well why do they know you have more money - keep your lip zipped. My first choice would be a simple, "sorry things are tight this week". You only have to turn people down a few times and they will quit asking.

If they press you - then you know you have been a prize sucker and can come up with a list of excuses.

"My aunt's cat needs an operation and it took all my money"
"My mother needs to get her molar crowned, did you know that costs $600." This is a particularly good one because your mother has a lot of molars.

Teeth and pets are always good.

Just tell them to truth. Tell them that unless they start paying you back, you won't lend them anymore money because you can't afford this.

Your friends should understand. Ask them to walk in your shoes for a bit. if they had more money, I bet they wouldn't want to lend you money every week without getting paid back.

Start a micro bank within your office and one day you will make more money than them but you won't have to work anymore.

For small loans just take their watches, ties, shirts and so on.
For big loans just take their cars.

After a while you will take their houses too.

It you money and they get paid just like you do, if they choose to spend their money it on them. You are not their banker. Just tell you are not leaning out any more money and stick to it. If they get mad so be it If they are being friendly just becaue you are lending them money, you are not missing much as coworker s any way.
