mediocre_poet | How does a FAFSA work? |
I have completed my FAFSA and it has been accepted. I am eligable for money, but how does it work? Does the money go to the school, if so how is it disbursed? Can that money be used for books, or only for class fees and so forth? Additional Details This is the notice that I recieved,
Based on the information we have on record for you, your EFC is 03665. You
may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and other federal student aid.
Your school will use your EFC to determine your financial aid eligibility for
federal grants, loans, and work study, and possible funding from your state and
school. |

When you filled out the fasta form , the school gets the information for example if you are staying in the dorms etc.... What happens is that the school will send you out a letter with all the grants/ loans/ work study etc on it. You have to send it back to the University on whether you accept the package or accept the package with these changes or deny it completely. Along with this is a promissory note saying that if you take out the loans that you will pay them back. ( my daughter calls this signing your life away) Books, living expenses, tuition fees are all part of the package. And the University gets the check first , takes out the tuition and fees and dorm fees if you are staying on campus and it sends you the rest usually right before the start of classes So you can buy books etc. Books will give you a minor stroke when you see how expensive they are. And if you get work study try to get in your department in which your major is.. My daughter learned allot of things seeing profs outside of class and it helped her network within the school of engineering. Best of luck to you. |

NOT VERY WELL!!
Really, it's an ok program, and it can be very helpful while you're trying to complete school. Yes, you can use the money for books, room and boards . . other college related expenses.
Some schools recieve the funds, take out tuition, and give you the remainder. Others, like the university my husband is attending, recieve the funds, take out tuition, and put the remainder in an expense account. They hang on to it until the end of the year, just in case there are any other expenses against your account. So he won't get his "finacial aid" (the money we need now!!) until after May 31. It's been there, waiting for 9 months. AND . .they keep the interest that has accrued while it's sat there!! |

As long as you put the school you will be attending on the list of schools that data is to be sent to, they will take that data and say what you qualify for. Depending on what you qualify for, it will tell you what you can apply it towards. |

FAFSA depends on your parents or you financial status. Using income statments taxes etc.. helps FAFSA determine what your family's estimated contribution is for college. This helps you get both federal and state grants and credits to pay for school. Depending on what school you want your information FAFSA information to go to that school will use it to prepare an award package for you. The school uses the information to show you what you can pay and what is available from your FAFSA, School grants loans and other programs. It all gets dispursed automatically by the schools financial aid office.
Good luck! |

The money usually goes directly to the school. Did you get a stanford loan?? Or do you have to pay back? All of these things depend, there are so many different ways to get and dispurse loans depending on what kind and where you're getting the funds from. The best possible thing you can do is write down a list of your questions, and go see your college financial aide advisor. They can answer all of your questions related to your personal situation. |

The best thing to do is go to the school you put on the FAFSA application and explain to them that you are now eligble for the money, and they will get you set up.
The money I recieved always went to the college itself because my grants were less than the total owed. I do know of people who received the checks at home. I'm not sure how, below I put their customer service information to find out more information. |

Based on your FAFSA, the schools you had it sent to will send you notices of having financial aid packages created for you. Your school's policy of refunds and whatnot will decide how you can use your money. For instance, my school refunds to me how much money I don't use for my tuition and fees. I then use that money for books, etc. |

they send you the money to use for your schooling. They do check with the school to make sure you are attending. After you graduate you have to start paying it back |

Once you have completed the FAFSA, you will need to apply for a federal PELL grant. You should be able to get that from your school. The PELL will pay for tuition and books. If there is money left over after your expences have been covered, you will be issued a refund check. Good luck. |

It goes to your school first. The school will use it to pay for your classes. If there is any money left over after tuition is paid, you receive a check in which you cash and you can use the rest of the money for anything like books, school supplies, or what ever you choose even if it is a new outfit for school. |

The source of the money usually determines how it can be used and how it is distributed. My daughter's scholarship monies are paid directly to the university and cover tuition only. Check with the organization providing the funds. |
