How does a spender become a saver?

monger187
By not spending as much money. Seriously though, by realizing that material things are not ultimately what make you happy, and coming to grips that your friends and neighbors might have more stuff than you, and being completely okay with that.

Irishbeauty
realizing that more important things lay ahead..
spending creates chaos and debut.
stop the want.. shift the feeling of needing to buy something to more healthy things as exercise, walking, playing with your pets

I like horses
A spender becomes a saver by paying himself first!

Save automatically! Have part of your paycheck go automatically to a separate savings/investing account. You can set this up with your HR office or at your bank. Then you can spend the rest guilt-free since you know you've already saved that month.

I used to be a big spender and stacked up huge debts. That is what converted me to being a saver - it's a horrible feeling having debts and trying to scrap by paying the minimum each month. I finally paid mine off after a couple of years and i suppose i got used to not spending alot of money as now i find it quite hard to part with my money and watch my pennies. However i guess some people start to think about things they really want and need to save for which motivates them to save!

Throw out your credit cards and only use cash.

Before you spend anything, set a certain amount aside for savings. Make sure you contribute to the savings EVERY pay day. It can be very tempting to spend the money but you should really have something set aside for emergencies, the future, etc.

Easy- Have a reason to do it.

For example, say you want to take a trip that costs $1000. Every time you buy something that is not completely necessary, weigh it against going on the trip. "If I buy this, I will delay my trip by X amount of days." if the item passes this test, the next question is "Can I get something similar that is less expensive but still does the job??" or "Does anyone I know have one that may loan it to me? " And then, the final question "Do I really want the item enough to dust it, clean it, take care of it".
