How does everyone deal with paying student loans?
I have had my loans in forebearance for about 2 years thinking I would get a better job. Well, I actually lost my job at the bank I was working so now I am going down the criminal justice route. Anyways, my monthly payment is going to be about $400. I am just making ends meet now with a few nights out here and there. How does everyone do it? I sometimes don't really see why I went to the trouble to get a degree. Do you guys find it hard paying your loan each month?

kbtny is right! I am in a 20 year repayment program on my student loans........AFTER filing Bankruptcy (Student loans forced me into), in 1999. I am already 46 so I will be paying until I turn 58!!

I too tried to use "options" for financing my education, the Military Student Loan Repayment Program was a JOKE!! They were supposed to pay up to 10% of my loans plus interest for every year of service. Payments stopped when I was injured in Desert Storm, and during my Bankruptcy the "lender" claimed NO PAYMENTS were made..........so he "pocketed" all the Departmetnt of Defense payments.

This made the Federal Judge doubt my side of the Bankruptcy request to discharge my student loans (Disabled and undue financial hardship).

I have been struggling for 8 1/2 years (since Bankruptcy), with the "end" still almost 12 years away!

Good Luck to you.

I lived at home afterwards, worked my *** off, saved money and paid them off. Took 5 years.

Paying off student loans is tough.

I suggest sending in whatever you can to chip away at them. Even paying interest only or sending in $20/week helps.

The other thing you can do is to look at programs that will help you re-pay your student loans. e.g. Becoming a teacher or nurse in areas where they are needed.

Getting an education is always a good thing. You may never be able to bankrupt your way out of a student loan but an education can never be repossessed.

Use your college's career center & alumni network to find a job that you love & that will pay you more $.

I gave up...I'm in the same situation. They've garnished my wages but it's still less than the payment I would have to make. I've tried working with them to get to a reasonable payment amount, but they refuse to listen. Someday I'm going to pay them back, but they are going to have to wait until I get a better paying job!

I pay the minimum about $92 a month because like you I barely make ends meet even though I have a bachelors degree. At the rate I am going I won't finish paying my student loan until I am about 70.There is no easy way around it.But don't not pay your loans because the agencies can take your tax refund money away from you to pay for them. Good luck

It's nuts. Absolutely nuts. I am fortunate in that I only had two years of college to pay for and that wasn't that bad.

You have received great answers. Just like everyone else said JUST PAY THEM. Anything you send in will help. I have been paying my on time now for the past year & it has helped increase my credit score (that is the only thing it is good for). People tell you, you need to go to college, but don't tell you that you will be paying for it the rest of your life. The greatest slap in the face (when I was in college) was seeing foreign exchange students going to my school for free when I am paying out the a$$. I think I vetted enough.

To answer your question, just like the rest of us, you are stuck with this bill the rest of your life & bankrupcy doesn't even get rid of it. Got to love our Government

Yes, we all do. But this is life. You can try and talk to someone about reducing the payment, but it only delays the inevitable. Take a job to cover your exoenses and keep looking for a better job, or if possible, take out one loan to pay off all outstanding debt and have a single payment you can handle. Life is hard, this is what makes you grow as a person. Good luck
