How has the economy affected your grocery shopping habits?
Have you started buying more generic products?

Do you buy more in bulk?

Do you forgo "luxury" items?

Do you find yourself using coupons religiously?

Reflect on how the changes have affected your finances. Any tips?

My fiance and I used to spend $120 a week on groceries without blinking an eye. That's a lot of dough to feed only 2 people.

We started eliminating unnecessaries. We are each allotted one 'snacky' food per shopping trip, we buy what produce is in season, and visit local farmers markets where we can.

We've also started planning meals before going shopping. Knowing what you need to buy for the week and making a list makes it easier to manage. We stick to the list, and therefore spend less.

Another little trick: We started using the same bath/shower products. We used to use separate shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, and the like. Now, we've found products that the both of us can use (nothing too manly or too girly) so we're not spending a fortune on that stuff.

We do buy generic too...bot for everything, but for some stuff: Bread, some cereals, oatmeal, and other little things are store brands instead of brand name.

We've limited take out to once a week. Otherwise, we cook nightly, and bring leftovers to work for lunch the next day.

Lastly, before going groceries we eat. Never shop on an empty stomach. And we compare sales fliers and plan our shopping at the cheapest store in the area, and plan our meals around what's on sale.

I find myself scanning the grocery store ads much more now. I try to stay stocked up enough not to run out of certain things, that way I can take advantage of sale prices more often, depending on what store has the most bargains. We don't get much coupon traffic here, so price comparison is the next best thing. Price shopping has always been a way for me to save money, and it is even more important now, in today's economy.

I have always used store-brand generics for some items. For some things, they're similar quality; others not so much. So I use them selectively.

I use coupons for things I use frequently but I am not coupon obsessed. I have been using bulk shopping at Costco quite a bit more and they are now providing coupons and I am using them extensively. Between the bulk savings and the coupon, you end up with a really good deal on some things. I keep an eye out for specials too.

We have forgone some luxury items but we still buy wine. But I am bargain hunting on that too. Mostly we are deferring some larger purchases, like the new sofa we were contemplating.

LOL Having 2 growing boys in this house made me a much better shopper!

I have always clipped coupons. Scanned the flyers for sales and shopped at warehouse stores.
I tend not to buy too many generic items. My family and I just dont like them and if they wont eat them then there is no savings.
No that 1 of my sons is no longer living at home I have seen a real drop in the grocery bills! lol

There are ways to cut the grocery bill by clipping coupons if the coupon reflects a real savings. You have to really read the coupons.

Right now is when I am stocking up before winter sets in! I have already purchased a 50# bag of potatoes and have them in my basement. It will last until about the middle of Feb. Pasta, canned tomatoes to make my own sauce, canned veggies and frozen veggies,
Things like that!

If I dont have to go to the grocery store several times a week then I save on gas. Oh I also make sure we have an extra tank of propane for the grill too. We BBQ in the dead of winter too! lol Or if we lose power because of a storm.
It just take a bit of thinking ahead and writing a meal plan out and following through with it. Make ahead meals are great too.
In the long run I fell I have saved quite a bit of cash!

Rather than eating out for lunch every day, I make a little extra at dinner time and bring leftovers for lunch instead. I probably save close to $200 a month now!

When i don't have leftovers, I try to pack a nice healthy lunch to bring with me.

I do buy in bulk and only when items are on sale. I don't use a lot of coupons because I buy store brands more often because the savings is more than using national brands on sale and with a coupon. I make more substitutions, too, if the price of an item is more than I want to pay for it, I will buy something else in its place. I also started growing my own herbs, citrus, veggies and avocado. When I over produce, I either freeze or trade with my neighbors for their extra harvest. Saves all of us money on produce. And, my biggest sacrifice is changing from my gourmet brand of coffee and brewing the store brand!

I'm still doing the coupon shopping the same as I always have. The only thing I've noticed is that grocery prices have gone up, packaging size has gone down, and coupon values aren't as high as they used to be.

I think at most here we forgo on the luxury items to some degree. I have always be fairly frugal and a big "sale shopper" typically. If it's a good sale, I stock up.

One of the best investments we ever made was a vaccum sealer for our freezer meat products. Meats keep much longer in the freezer with that and it's just the best thing we ever bought.

I know I am scanning the papers more for sales even places I dont normally shop. Then I combine trips to certain stores that are in walking distance and stock up. I havent really stayed away from anything since I am not on a tight budget. I am just shopping for good deals

Patient Paws
We spend about $42.30 every time we shop, so we shop once every two or three weeks, sometimes, less than that. We can barely afford to make rent let alone eat, our friends have even started giving us handouts!

We buy what we can afford generically (NOT our Dr. Pepper!), we can't afford bulk unless its bread or a gallon of milk (lol). Our DOG food costs more than our entire months shopping bill.

My fiancee has a discount card 10% off of our purchases at walmart (which brings us down to the $42.30), and we can only- and I mean ONLY- shop after our bills are paid.

If its not generic (aside from Dr. Pepper)- we don't buy it unless its WAY on sale. The only non-generic stuff I can think that we buy is tooth paste and toilet paper.

The only tips I have is learn to love Tuna Helper (great value box brand), Great Value tuna, and Au Gratin potatoes (great value box brand). Thats our "king fit'' meal.

Due to my disability, I receive help from my state for food. I get $90 a month for food, which comes out to one dollar per meal. (or about $22/week) It's not easy eating healthy on that kind of budget, so I have to be real selective and clip coupons and buy generic on most things. Every so often, I find it necessary to go to the food shelf, but I do the best I can. I can't say I have never gone without eating, but I make damn sure my dogs eat. I never go grocery shopping hungry. I learned that lesson a long time ago!

My luxury item is Coke. Gotta have the REAL THING! I buy a 24 pack and limit myself to one can a day, which lasts almost a month!

Midnight Velvet AKA Dobiegang
Fortunately, I have been able to shop just like I always have.
I've always used coupons so that isn't new to me.
I don't buy generic
I don't buy in bulk
Still buy luxury items as before and
I have always used coupons.

Grand Champion!
I do look for sale items. There are items I'm willing to go generic on, others I'm not. But, I've started buying less "pre-packaged" and processed foods- as these are generally smaller portions and more money.

I have not only started cooking more at home, but looking more at bulk meals, rather than just enough to feed the 2. Things like soups and casseroles that can be divided and frozen. Not only does it cut costs, but it's nice to be able to grab a container out of the freezer, heat something up, and have a home cooked meal in less time.

Not necessarily related to groceries- but when buying gas---do NOT buy on Friday afternoons. If you can't buy before Friday morning, then wait until Tuesday. We have a gas station next to our store, and I've noticed that the gas prices go up on Friday night. They don't come down until Tuesday morning.

tentoes
It really hasn't.

We already clipped coupon, we already make our lunches at home, and we already make dinners at home. So, no real big changes with our shopping habits.

We do tend to have our meals based on what's on sale each week. And since it's just the 2 of us, we don't buy in bulk (don't have the cupboard, fridge or freezer space).
