if you had to live on the California coast - 50k isn't that much and not every single zoologist makes that kind of money - I seriously doubt you'll make it right out of college - you might only make 30k - I can't imagine there are a lot of openings in that field and depending on where you live, you might have to relocate far away to get a job - it's a not a field like accounting or nursing with lots of jobs available pretty much anywhere |

50k sounds a little high for zoology. I would be very happy with this salary. I had a friend who studied zoology, and she was paid 11/hr at a zoo. Her responsibilities and education were worth way more than 11/hr, but that is how the field of zoology is. I'm sure you would make more than 11/ hr outside the zoo, but 50k is unlikely. Are you basing this figure on zoologists with many years of experience? I honestly don't think you will be making that much right out of school.
Go for what you want to study. What may be a small salary for some is large for others. If you grew up in a family that made that little- 50k is a very small amount for a combined income- you are likely used to not having the luxuries. You are capable of living frugally and that is an asset! |

50K is a lot of money from where I stand. However, cost of living is lower where I live and I could support my family and pay my college loans with that. But, in todays lifestyles where everyone wants to make 6 figure income it may seem low. If you are wise and careful it could be enough for you to have a comfortable life and do something you can enjoy doing. I say go for a career that will make you happy and enough money to keep you feed, housed, clothed and allow a little savings to add up. A high paying job does not mean an enjoyable career. Happiness must have some kind of $$ amount attached. |

It's all about life style. I would jump for joy for half of that! How many will you be supporting? Will you be aiding aging parents? Will you have raises that account for inflation. Inflation can cut your buying power in half in a few years. |
