How long do you have to cash a check from the day it was written?
For example: You write a check in May and now in November it still has not been deposited, is the check still good?

backupplanc
Florida law, which I assume is similar elsewhere, states that checks older than 6 months MAY be rejected for deposit/cashing by the bank, but do NOT have to be rejected.

MrLou
The following from the Model Uniform Commercial Code

4-404. BANK NOT OBLIGED TO PAY CHECK MORE THAN SIX MONTHS OLD.
A bank is under no obligation to a customer having a checking account to pay a check, other than a certified check, which is presented more than six months after its date, but it may charge its customer's account for a payment made thereafter in good faith.

Check the parallel section from your state's version of the UCC.
A bank MAY pay the check anyway...

Yes it's still good the person already wrote it & deducted it from their account it doesn't matter when they cash it the check will still be good

shadowcat629
depends on the check. If it's a personal check, get ahold of the person who wrote it and make sure thay haven't put a stop payment on it. If it's a business check, it should say somewhere on there void after ___ days. Sometimes it's 60 days, sometimes it's 90 days. usually it's 90

Personal checks are good for 6 months...but a lot of banks overlook stale dates

As long as you want. I cashed a check from my aunt for graduation a year ago. I graduated 4 years ago and i just found it. Asw long as they dont cancel the check.

Nope, before 90 days yes. After 90 days NO... Go ask the person that wrote you the check to rewrite you another one. Then cash it before the 90 days is up. :)
