if you live in the UK they have recently (well within the last year) they have changed the law on this it used to be 3 years but they changed it 12 months so that it looks better as less people are bankcurpty at one time...

I happen to be bankruptcy file clerk for one of the world's largest creditors known to man. It defiantly depends on your particular case. If you file a chapter 7 I honestly have seen them last for 6 months to a year or more. Chapter 13's on the other hand can drag on FOREVER(pain in the butt). Those are the most popular chapters to file. But like I said you have to take into consideration what chapter would be best for you and your finances. I don't know if you own a business, a farm or whatever the case may be but if you are thinking about filing make sure you consult with a lawyer. I have seen many cases where the debtor wants to represent themselves in court (pro se)....NOT A GOOD IDEA. Talk with someone that knows the FULL bankruptcy law.
