I would buy the things we needed and put the rest into the bank. I am sensible with money now so would save a lot of it.

£1,000,000 will last ANY sensible person forever....invested conservatively, it can spin off £50,000 a year without ever getting any smaller. Therefore, if you draw £50,000 a year (or less) you will never use any of it up!

For the rest of my life, I would buy a house and save the rest.

I woud use the interest to pay off my debts first. Then buy a nice house and use the interest to make the payments on the house while I am still working. Once the house is paid off, I will use enough interest to invest in an IRA while contributing the maximum amount to my employer's retirement plan. In 10 to 15 years, I can retire comfortably for the rest of my life.

Spend nothing borrow everything let the interest pay the repayments that way it will last forever.
PS it is highly unlikely that this amount would mean you could give up work forever unless you were very careful this would not even cover the cost of a reasonable sized house.
