How many credit cards should a person have? How many cards are too much??

Preferably one that will pay you something for using it. I have only had one card for over 15 years. That one card has given me back over $5000.00 in cash.

One card allows you to keep your expenses down and your payments manageable - assuming you can pay them off. It Will also help you with your Credit Score. The more cards you have the more you can borrow against them and the lower your credit score will be. That is major league important when trying to buy a house and even a car. I just got a second card from discover as I was short of cash and what I wanted to buy this would let me pay it off in 6 months interest free. I got the car in August and only have one more payment to make and it will be paid off and it gets turned off.

I have no credit card other than my personal banking credit card. But, my mother had them many years ago. I can remember when i was little and my mother discovered the world of "credit cards". We had a very good christmas that year. And then it took her 10 years to pay the cards off. Can you imagine. My suggestion is to have your regular bank account card, then have one card for gasoline and one major card like visa mastercard or american express. Pay the balance in full every single month so that they don't get interest charges out of you. That's where they make all their money. People pay the minimum monthly payment then they end up with a staggering amount owed. Then they go get another credit card and fill it up. Never paying off the first one. This is why our country is in such a credit bind. People depend on their credit cards to live. What is out there that is so special that people have to spend spend spend?

Good Luck. Be credit smart. Pay off monthly, and only have a couple. So you can manage.

none there bad.

Any more than 1 is bad. I personally have none, if I can't afford it I don't buy it. But if you feel that you need more than one then you are at risk for serious financial troubles in the future.

if you can help it dont have any. i have to have admit i have one which i only use to make purchases over the internet. before i make the purchase i make sure i have enough money, then i pay the bill as soon as i can or atleast before any intrest is added to my account. try not pay intrerest where you can because do you really want someone else to have more of your money than you really need to give?!?!?!?

Realistically, one or two are enough. There's no reason to have a wallet full. Its how you use them that is most important.

No more than 2, maybe a Mastercard and a Visa, but use only one if possible. That makes it easier to manage. Always pay the full balance each month. Make sure there are no annual or other fees. Try to get one that gives you some kind of reward, cash back, air miles, etc. For instance, Citi Drivers Edge gives you money in the form of a rebate when you buy any car. One way to be sure you always have the money to pay the bill is to deduct your charges from your checkbook balance. They do make life easier in some situations but be very careful not to charge so much that you aren't able to pay the full balance each month.

Currently I have 4. All are maxed out. It is very hard to pay them back. So I truly suggest not having any. If you are trying to establish credit or something get a gas card or a department store card. Please just use it wisely and pay more than the minimum each month.

hollyhood_joe
I suggest only 2, but It doesn't matter how many credit cards you have, just as long as you keep your Debt-to-Income Ratio(including mortgage/rent) below 40%, and have credit cards with low APR and you are ok financially.

Max 2 (low limit though). You have to have a card to build credit ratings. If you have 2 different types (ie VISA & MC), you are set for any store.
If you pay off every time you use, you won't have as good a rating as someone who carries a little balance (banks like to make a little money off you, and will give you points for that). Make sure you make the payments (big time nailed if you don't), and make sure you pay in full every couple of months.

Best way to stay out of trouble, make sure you have the money to buy it, before you use a credit card. If you don't have the money, you'll end up in debt.

Good luck... they are so easy to abuse... and the banks love that.

just me
I have 2 and they are a pain in the butt... if you don't have to get one then don't.... Once you start charging things it becomes somewhat addictive.... It is not God's plan that we be in debt, so my dear if you don't have one don't get one.... I hate the day that I accepted that offer in the mail for a pre-approved credit card.... I lost a somewhat decent paying job, and now it is getting a little tougher to pay them more than the minimum payment on what I make now..... PLEASE DON'T GET ONE..... As my pastor always says "You don't want to be on plastic plantation" Which means you don't want to be a slave to debt for the rest of your life..... I hope that this helps.....

depends on your earning power.. i have 5 credit cards.. and i have 2 maxed out.. and it is starting to get hard for me to swing back to pay them off.. i suggest to only get 1 or 2.. and don't go near the max.
