How many people manage to save money?
When you get paid and after all your bills, mortgage, food, travel expenses, etc are paid do you get to save any money?

Yes -- as soon as I get my paycheck, I automatically put a set amount into a savings account. Then I pay my bills. It leaves me a little less spending money, but that's not a bad thing; it makes me think more carefully about how I spend my cash.

The key word is "after". The trick is to save "before".

Technique 1:

The secret to successful saving is to "pay yourself first."

If your pay clears on the last working day of the month, set up a "sweep" to take out, say £10 on the first of the month straight into a deposit account.

If, when you get to the end of the month, you see your balance heading down towards zero, the tendency is to NOT nip out for that drink after work, or get a loaf of bread and make your own sandwiches rather than picking up pre-made ones... you don't miss it, and the savings start.

After a couple of months of saving a tenner, up it to £20... then £30... then £50....

Within a couple of years, chances are, you'll be putting a couple of hundred quid away each month. Compound that up for the next 30 years, and there's your retirement.

Technique 2:

For the next month, write down EVERYTHING you buy in a notepad.

Then, at the end of the month, work out how much you REALLY needed, and how much you could have either avoided or bought cheaper.

Most people are shocked at the amount of "small stuff" they buy, and how much it adds up to.

Particularly stuff like Internet shopping, where it does "feel" like you're spending money.

It might be a good idea to make a list before you get paid: bills+ mortgage+ food+ other things... Then try cutting some things off the list and not getting discouraged of the others ;)
I also try putting money into an account from time to time, the day I get paid, no matter if it's a ridiculously small sum.
I "hide" some cash in an old diary and I only spend it as a last resort.
I pack sandwiches and apples and try not to buy any snacks in town. I love discount supermarkets and discount clothing shops and I try to take advantage of special offers, sales etc.
When you go shopping, you can also try to remember how much you save every time you find a better price and at the end of the day, put away the total amount of money you've saved.
Saving money is automatic now, even if will I spend (some of) it next week, I still got into the habit of saving.

Yes, it is possible to save money, if you dont buy unnecessary goods all the time.

Scocasso !
Nothing left in our family after food, rent, bills, etc. then on top of that we are taxed.
Same goes for everyone I know.

That's what happens when we allow evil people to rule over us.

i never seem to manage it !i would love to but i just can't seem to save.

its me
its hard, at least in england. I do it only by never buying lunches at work, not spending on booze on a night out, and shopping rarely and wisely. I don't buy things I don't need. Also charity shops have some great stuff, both clothes and books.

Do save some but it's always for something eg.car bills, new furniture or hols.

Everyone has the power to save. You need to pay yourself first before you pay anyone else.

Besides 401k's and Roth IRAs, a good rule of thumb is to have at least $1000 socked away as an emergency savings fund, but ideally you should save up 3-6 months' worth of income.

The Honest one
Hi Sarah. To answer your question, the answer is yes I manage to save money. I'm not a skinflint or a scrooge, but I look at other people who are in dept looking around for the cheapest bargains. I started saving the first month when I started working in the real world. By the age of 23 I brought my own house although be it small with cash, therefore I did not have to pay a mortgage with the expensive rates of interest, I also didn't want to owe anyone who sits on there butts counting their profits. Everything I brought in my house I paid cash. 20 years later, I own 2 houses in England and a large house in France where I now work in my own business from which I built from nothing but 5000 English pounds, pre Euro. My son has followed my lead and has just brought his first house with cash and yet he wants for nothing and has never asked me for any helping hand. It is possible for people to save regardless of how much they earn, they just need to be sensible and only buy the things that are necessary. as the saying goes, if you look after the pennies, the pounds will look after themselves Best wishes, Peter

It can be very difficult but even if it is just a few coins in a jar, it'll soon add up and I think seeing it grow, helps you mentally and gives you encouragement to continue.

Good luck x
