vonnybon | How many people think that the banks overdrafts fees and policies are unfair? |
at $25-$35 a pop are the banks making there money off our mistakes. I had an over site off an ebay purchase that charged my account 15 consecutive charges of $1.89. I didnt make my deposit on time (by like 35 minutes) and the bank charged me 11 overdraft fees in the amount of $33 bucks a piece. thats $366.00 for just a little mistake.
When I tried to talk to them about it, I got hung up on. Additional Details gofyours: pretty big slap though dont you think just for a little mistake |

That is extremely unfair in my opinion. I understand how it would happen, it's computer generated. However banks do have the ability to waive fees and they do it every day. That much in charges is excessive and someone will help you get it resolved if you are politely persistent.
I don't really understand how you got charged 15 times for $1.89 though... did you buy 15 different items all the same price, or was it the seller's mistake?
You need to call the bank again. You'll surely get someone different. Do not scream, do not swear, or do anything to get hung up on. Talk calmly and professionally, explain what happened, and see what they say. If the person is unhelpful, politely ask to speak to their supervisor. If you get nowhere, go into the bank personally. Ask to speak to "Deposit Services" or someone in customer service that can help you "resolve an issue".
I would take a guess that this is a big, national bank, right? As soon as you get this straightened out, pull out your money, close the account, and head to your nearest LOCAL bank or credit union. If something goes wrong, a small bank will offer you personalized service and they are usually much more forgiving. Your money is just as safe at a small bank as at a large one, they are also FDIC insured. |

You bet they're making money. But it's the account holders' responsibility to know the terms of the account and keep a positive balance in it. I've been banking for 35 years and never paid an overdraft fee. It's not that hard. |

You screwed up. How is that the bank's problem? It's clearly laid out in the fine print. It's fair. |

Granted, your case seems to be extreme. However, you and only you can be responsible for the balance in your account. And while most banks are operating the same these days, the fact of the matter is, these are the terms you agreed to when you opened the account. Just because you may not have read all the fine print isn't the bank's fault. |

Did you know that they also charge a fee to the one who received the insufficient funds check? That makes no sense, who would knowingly accept a bad check? |

It's keeping me freaken paranoid.
I keep my balances in check - but scared to death to make a mistake.

Here's what I think:
1) The bank is within its rights to charge you every time you initiate a transaction without enough money to cover it.
2) Banks often post a person's largest transaction of the day first. This means that if there isn't enough money in the account, all subsequent small transactions will incur an overdraft fee. This allows them to collect an overdraft fee on many transactions, rather than one. I do not think this is fair.
3) If there was a problem with eBay that was not your fault, you should contact the person or company who was at fault and attempt to get them to cover your overdraft charges. The bank might be willing to work with you (if the multiple $1.89 charges weren't your fault), but if you have a history of over-drafting your account, they probably will be less willing to help.
4) I'm not saying you weren't polite when you called the bank, but I do have to wonder why they would hang up on you if you were calmly discussing the matter with them.
5) Even if the bank didn't charge a dime in over draft fees, it is still not prudent to keep such a low balance in your account. Over drafts affect your credit rating, which can affect everything from the interest rate you're charged when you buy a house or car to how much you pay for car insurance.
6) Regardless of what you think is fair, banks will charge what they want to charge; so you need to work within the rules of the game. You should try very hard to control your spending for at least a month so that you can build up a nice balance in your checking account. Then tell yourself you won't go below $100. That will leave you a cushion to protect yourself in case a check is slow to clear or a vendor makes mistake. |

the banks are punishing people to make up for all the money they are losing on mortgages and credit cards since the economy tanked. |

Yes they are.
But, how do you think they are keeping their doors open?
By charging outrageous fees and interest rates and gifts from the government.
Guess what, this is only going to get worse as the government demands repayment of the money they are showering on the banks.
Figure it out, the government now works for THEM, not us. And look around, that is exactly why we got here--Congress making laws to benefit the mega-corporations and destroy small businesses and the middle class.
And it started long before GWB took office. |

I can relate and recently switched banks because of this...it was not my fault that a check that showed cleared and deposited was later returned so i bounced a bunch of stuff...I have been with that bank 16 years and they told me "as a courtesy, they could remove one overdraft fee"...bullshit...so I sucked out my money and went elsewhere......and am much happier!! |
