There's good debt and bad debt. Good debt are things like mortgages and student loans. Those things provide you with the opportunity to prosper and become financially secure.
On the other hand, there is bad debt. That's the debt that actually reduces your ability to become financially secure. We are talking about credit cards, and car loans here. Those type of things actually decrease in value over time.
I have a pretty good chunk of good debt. I have two mortgages, one on my residence and one on a rental property. They combine to around $450K, but the value of the two properties is significantly more than what I owe.
Other debt does not exist. I pay off my credit cards in full every month, and I have paid off my car and student loans years ago. |

Not a bean, thank God. I was at one time up to the eyeballs, but I stuck it out, paid back every cent and have had no debts for years, barring the regular Phone, electricity, water bills, which are paid as soon as I receive them. |
