HanZ is way off with Fairfield County, CT! But then he lives with his parents. You can't even find a studio or 2-room apt in Bridgeport (1 of CT's 3 slums) for less than $1000 nowadays.

More typical for one person:
Rent $1000-1500
Utilities $300
Car $300-750
Car Insurance $150
Medical Insurance 800-1300
Property Tax on Auto 100 (300-400/quarter)
Gas, maint $250
(if NYC commuter $600 train + parking)
Groceries $150
Personal $100
Not everyone can afford much in the line of clothes, shoes, tenant's insurance, snow tires, medical co-pays/dental/pharm/vision, entertainment, etc.

Affordability ratio for a one-bedroom apt: min $26/hr single; $28/combined per hour for a couple. If you earn less than that, you are hard-pressed to find a place to live. Rooms and roommate situations are running in the vicinity of $1000/mo + utils.

These figures are about half what it costs to live in Manhattan.

. .
I dont want to break down my own expense list, but I just want to add that that list is missing things like gas (car), if people have pets they spend on pet food/vet/grooming, plus things like entertainment for themselves (you know, going out, movies, dinner and what not).
