How much emergency money specifically do u need for life time?
i mean how much money would u like to have throughout your life just to cover emergeny things like unemployment or illnesses, assuming u earn as much as u spend monthly and this amount of money is just for emergency - how much would it be for you in $ or £ ?

Emergency is a one time use. I say 2000 dollars in cash and half of that in small bills. placed in a safe with a loaded hand gun. Will solve many so called emergencys. Let face it if 2k will fix your problem right away you need to pick up the gun.

The general rule is to have enough money on hand to cover 3 months' worth of bills including rent/mortgage, utilities, food, transportation costs, etc.

Personally I can cover expenses for up to 6 months. I work in an industry that is not very secure right now and if I were to lose my job, I probably wouldn't be able to get another position in this field, so I've got to be able to cover expenses while breaking into a new industry.

Mike
To cover emergancy's, you should always have 3-6 times your monthly income set aside.

I agree with others, one point to add. I was married to someone for 25 years who insisted on "saving for a rainy day"....we saved and saved and then....divorce! He got most of the savings and we both missed out on a lot of fun over the years!

I guess what I'm saying is of course cover your back, but don't let it take over your life...life is for enjoying too.

The rule of thumb is 3 months earning but make sure you have enough insurance to cover long term catastrophies.

BTW since you state "for life time". As people suggest it isn't going be a certain amount for your life. First off the amount on hand is going to vary depending on your current situation, but also say you have got that amount and never have to use it in comparison to someone that needs to use it a few times in their life then they will of course need more, even if they both maintain 3 months salary.

The Scorpion
Some people disagree. If you have a credit card with substantial credit and low balance, you can always get money off of it in an emergency. The problem with stashing money away for emergencies is that it's usually saved in a way that it's not making any significant interest for you.

You need to have 6 months of your normal monthly expenses in savings. Mortgage or rent, utilities, food, clothing etc. for 6 months.

raymonddic
Normal pratice is around 3 to 6 months of your current salary. You do not have to save it overnight but along the way, 6 months will be the optimal figure. This money is not in the form of share or investment, it have to be in the form of cash in the bank.
