Article Excerpt
"African American consumers are a powerful force in the U.S. economy. Based on the 2001 Consumer Expenditure Survey, the $383 billion spent by African American consumers accounts for 5% of all U.S. consumer spending and 4% of Gross Domestic Product. Despite this collective buying power, black consumers are still greeted with suspicion about their intentions and with skepticism about their ability to pay. " |

Are you serious? That is the stupidest question I have heard of today. How much money do you spend each week? I don't think race has anything to do with how much money you spend in a week. It depends on how much money you have in order to spend on the things or items you need. Every race spends money every week...sometime on necessities needed and sometimes on the most un-needful things around. You really need help asking a real stupid question like that! |

This is just a stupid question! How much money do Caucasians spend? Asians? Blondes? Men? Women?
Here's a great answer, as much as they need and/or want to! |

Are you serious? This is like asking "How much money do brunettes spend each week?"
The African Americans in question... are they living in poverty? Are they school teachers and businessmen? Are they entertainers? Professional athletes? Single moms? Architects? Do they live in NYC? Atlanta, GA? On a farm in West Virginia? LA? Washington State?
Clearly this question requires more information to be answered properly. I know that some surveys have been done by individual companies to determine what marketshare of their profits is attributable to purchases by specific ethnic groups, but in general? This is just a very weird question. |

They say that "there's no stupid question" (that's the cliche) But, come on now, this question challenges that trite remark. How the hell can someone come up with an amount or even attempt to even answer such question.
Thanks for the 2 points. You should really think about what you are going to ask; of course, only if you don't mind looking like a buffoon. |

I don't think they spend any different from any other race. It basically comes down to your spending style. |

They spend just as much as most other socioeconomic groups. However, they accumulate far less wealth than any other race.
You can blame it on the "bling" factor. Purchases tend to be dominated by transportation needs.
African Americans that do want to begin accumulating more wealth should take advantage of the wealth and asset building programs in their area. Many nonprofit organizations offer asset building programs in addition to credit counseling.
Our organization receives grants that help low-to-moderate income consumers buy a home. We can even help with matching funds to encourage saving for a downpayment.
The following directory lists credit and financial counseling agencies by state. Ask them if they offer an IDA (Individual Development Account) for homeownership. |

It depends on how much their bills are and their lifestyle. |

This is a tough question. There are a few African American guys down the street that sell crack cocaine and spend $30,000 a week on rims. |

That's a dumb question. How much money to white people spend? Come on. Each individual is different. |

Impossible to calculate due to differences regarding financial standings. Although, there are statistics indicating the percentage of African Americans in a certain "class." |

I think it depends on the size of the welfare check. But usually all of it on expensive sneakers. |

I don't think it's a dumb question. I think it is a question that can be answered. it is a question important enough to ask that the United States Department of Commerce office of the US Census Bureau, spends millions of dollars collecting the data as acurately as mechanically possible.
Even if all the races spending equaled in amounts it is still a "How much" question.
