Me and my boyfriend are moving in together!
We are currently looking for a place to move into between $700-900.
We hope to be moved in by May 1st.
We currently have $4,600 saved.
We have 1 car,to share our things and thats all.
Is that enough to start out?

Well - it depends on what your combined income is.

As long as you have enough to cover your monthly expenses (rent, food, gas, insurance, utilities are the regular payments, plus less-regular payments for clothing, entertainment, gifts, travel), then you should be OK. Don't forget things like laundry expenses...

What you've got saved up should cover your move-in expenses on a new apartment. Many charge one or two months' rent in advance (which end up being your first and last month's rent, so you're not losing anything) plus a deposit to cover any potential damages when you move out. Occasionally you can fnd move-in specials. You might try to time your move around something like that.

You'll also want to reserve a few hundred dollars for those things that neither of you already have (kitchen stuff, furniture, decorations, etc.).

Beyond that, though, you should make sure you keep something in a safe account that you won't touch except for in an emergency.

My recommendation would be for you to sit together and draw up a budget, with income on one side and expected expenses on the other to figure out if you can afford to live month-to-month easily, then draw up a second one for the initial move-in expenses compared to what you have saved up. If you have more than enough month-to-month, then you can be a little less-concerned about having enough saved up-front.

You need to take home 500 a week to servive in this economy and thats just surviving. thats both of you a week.

Do you both have a steady income coming in? It will be tough to start out with that amount of money. You'll need furniture and dishes and linens and food and all that boring stuff needed to set up house. The money will go faster than you think. If you're really cheap and watch what you spend, you might have enough.

the Boss
That is plenty of money to start with, but you also have to look at cash flow. What is your income and what are your expenses? Just look at what will happen. It's pretty simple if you include all your expenses and are realistic about it.

Nick Z
Whether it's enough or not depends on your monthly income.

You have enough money now for about three months of living expenses. But presumably the two of you plan to stay together in that apartment for more than three months. Which means that the two of you need to have a steady income enough to cover all of your expenses indefinitely.

Before you start out, you need to be sure that you can continue after starting out.

Dr.Henry17
You didn't mention what your combined income is.

Assuming you live in an area where you need to give first and last that will be $1800.

That leaves $2800 for any deposits the utilities might require from you since you'll be new customers and for furniture. It can be done but you'll be living in a fairly badly decorated home.

More important to this question is how much income will you have coming in each month not how much you have saved.

All you need is love... but i would recommend to have money for marriage as well before you start out... or even move in for that matter.

it is never enough
my sister is 20, has two very well paying jobs and has her own place (with low rent) and she is still always broke

If you both spend less then you make in income, you have a chance to start off.

teacher4ever
you have enough money usually you will need two months rent for your apt. one hundred for a line phone. hopefully you will be able to find an apt for that cheap. god bless

Trinity
It would depend a lot on where you live. Cost of living calculator: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html
Good luck!

It sounds like enough to start off, but if you are trying to rent an apartment or townhouse I would make sure that you BOTH have a job, looking at a price range around 700-900...you will need extra money for groceries, furniture, gas...etc. I know from experience that living month to month is a VERY stressful thing! Good luck with everything! = )

It really depends on what state you live in and to determine the cost of living. I stay in Birmingham, Alabama. I live in a good neighborhood with a mixed community. I have a 2bed 1 bath with washer and dryer connection, all electric with no water bill at 535.00 amonth. Here 700-900 a month I could have a deluxe apartment in the sky in an excellent neighboorhood, but here anybody paying that much would either buy or rent a house. As far as buying furniture I paid less that 2 grand for some nice living room, bedroom. and a dining room set. I also have to buy housely items like a garbage can, dishes, an iron, ironing board, towels and bath rags and little things like that. 4600 is more that enough to get the things you need, unless you want a big screen or flat screen in every room. Some advice that I was told was to start out small and work your way up. But I think you guys will be ok. Im 23. I moved out when I was 20 on my own. I work and go to school fulltime and take care of a kid. My motto is as long as the bills get paid everything is ok. Good luck to you guys, you will be ok.

Yes, but you want to make sure that you have a steady job and can handle what ever might be throw at you. It sounds good so far, but make sure that you keep it up.
