dramaqueen | How much money do you think someone needs to live off? |
On another forum I use, someone suggested that they thought in order for a single person to have a basic standard of living (without saving anything or making debt repayments) they needed to take home £1000 a month and they had general agreement, which surprised me, because this sounds like a huge amount to me.
How much do you think is needed to fund a reasonably happy but not extravagant lifestyle? What should that cover?
(non-Brits can answer too but do the currency conversion if you can!) Additional Details It just surprised me because I've always managed to live off not much more than half that- I'd like to know what people spend it all on. |

That is a lot! i live with my gf and we spend that between us.
And that includes, all bills, mortgage, car, mobiles, internet.
And we have a good house and frequently go out and buy stuff for our selves.
I think they were responding to a lavish lifesyle and propably don't know how much a life costs. |

It depends where in the country you live. I live in London and £1000 a month would barely get me through, rent is high so is council tax, it cost more to eat and travel and you do need some sort of social life to stop you reaching for the razor blades.
It does however make a big difference if you live with someone.
Me and my gf bring in about £3200 a month between us and we live comfortably, but not extravagently, we are able to save and have nice things and manage a holiday or 2 a year, but we don't go out every week and spend loads on booze in the pubs and clubs. I guess it depends on what you choose to spend your money on. |

Depends on where you live. For example, a flat in London would cost £150K, in Swansea, a similar flat would cost 80K - the mortgage payments would be massively different. |

well first i would say it depends on ur lifestyle and ur outgoings, if you live at home or with some other family member, just a small wage will allow a single person to lead a reasonable if not good lifestyle (as most home livers or family stayers dont have to pay rent or council tax etc, they just pay a certain small charge to the head of house each week/month)
if you have ur own place the cost of living goes up dramatically, if this is the case say the person has a car too.. that would be... rent, council tax, gas, electric, water, insurance, petrol, tax & car insurance, food, clothes etc etc, then id say yes about £800-£1000 a month is about right. having said that i have a single working friend who has a house and 3 kids and she manages to live a good life on under £1000 a month! and she gets no suppliments from the goverment other than child benefit (which is including in the under £1000 total)
if your good with money you can live a good lifestyle on any wage, im excellent with money, ive had good jobs and bad but ive always managed the key is too:
budget well
pay bills on time to avoid late payment charges
save when you can to help in times when money is low
and always bargain hunt.....just cause summot is expensive dont mean its good, or better quality etc....
also when you decide you dont want summot anymore, sell it on to make money back to pay for new things (ebay is great for this) |

It's an impossible question as it depends on your lifestyle and how you define a basic standard of living. £1000 per month doesn't represent a huge annual salary these days, I'm afraid. |

Depends where you live, but probably £1000 is about right. By the time you have paid rent/mortgage, bills, food and transport costs, you aren't going to be left with a huge amount to spend on luxuries. |

If I didn't have a credit card to pay off, I could survive on about £350 a month.
£100 rent
£100 bus fares
£150 on food, clothes, toiletries, entertainment |

I would probably say slightly less £800 would be enough for someone to live off basically, £1000 would be quite luxurious I would say
edit
I live alone and pay
£400 a month rent
£75 council tax
£60 gas/electic
£40 phone/TV
£40 transport
£30 mobile phone
then u have food and everything on top |

I think you're asking from the wrong point of view. It's not the amount that counts, but it's the kind of lifestyle you believe in that you want to pursue, and what you have to do (how much money you have to sustain) to stay there.
I think you have to assess the way you handle your assets, and where you put them. Look into the concept of passive incomes and you don't need to limit your life based on a number. |

in Scotland if your take home pay is more than £145per week you pay full rent full council tax =£60pw rent £20pw council tax, then electric £15pw which leaves very little for anything else so I dont understand why we have people wanting to come and live in this country?. |

It should cover the bills and the basic needs of life. Having some money left over to save is always a good thing. |

i'm no financial expert what-so-ever yet i'm living off a happy life with juz half of my salary to be brought home which currently i'm earning around USD 1000. still, it has always be my thought there are many other things that would affect how much one need to live off like number of commitments, the economic standing and personal status juz to name a few. thus, should we detail the other affecting factors first, maybe the question would become more clear and clarified, more rationale to be responsed with. |

well for a dramaQUEEN, there is no upper limit and for an ordinary guy, £600 a month would be more than enough! |
