You should have 3-6 monthes of living expenses on reserve in your bank account because it is easily accessible. Any more than that should be in investements and accounts that have higher interest than traditional bank accounts. If it's not earning at least 5% it's not earning. |

Most banks require minimum of $1000 to open a saving's account. You could find some banks that require less. However, to save in the bank accounts, at least you need to make sure you don't run out of money for the next few months, and enough in there for the bank not to charge you fees. The best is not to get bankrupt. |

i think to be on the safe side you need to have at least what your total expenses are for 6 months.
think about it this way -- say you get laid off with out notice.
you could take a two week vacation -- get you head straight in out and come back and have 5.5 months to find a job worry free.
when i was working i had 6 - 6 month cd's - that came due each month -- i would roll the cd over - take the interse and have a night on the town and go back to work knowing i was covered. |

That depends on what you are trying to accomplish and what type of knowledge you have of making money at will to add to that bank account.
Are you conservative and do everything conventional or do you get out of the box and inject some creativity.

Well it really depends on what you are saving for. But its always best to have at least 6 times your monthly pay in your savings account. That is for any emergency that may happen.
