Jessica S | How much should I be asking for? |
I work full time for a real estate company in CA. I make 10.50 an hour doing administrative duties. I make okay money for being right out of high school. I graduated last year. However, I need to make more. I just recieved a raise of .50 cents so I won't be asking for one any time soon. I'm thinking about getting a little job after work and for on the weekends. How much money should i be asking for an hour? I dont even know what CA's min wage is. It's a little retail shopping store- the kind that sells girls clothes. I'm very skilled for the position of sales associate with a background in retail and customer service of 2 years. What should i ask for? Thanks. |

regardless of what you ask, they are going to start you at minimum wage, which last time I saw was 5.25 or 5.75.. |

minimum wage is i think seven twent five now, or is it still six seventy five. ask for an assistant mgr wage, if youre skilled, theyll prolly have you doing assistant mgr-y type things soon anyway, like shipping recieving etc. so make sure they pay you accordingly. also, since youre already in real estate, you might wanna think about just skipping the retail job and getting a jr loan certification and doing mortgages, you can make nice extra money doing that and work towards eventually being SLO-just a thought |

Get your real estate license and earn what you want. It's your choice. It seems like you like your freedom, create your own destiny. |

I think you should ask for $8 an hour at least, that is just a bit above minimum wage and it should make it worth it with gas prices what they are. Also, with working at a real estate company you should really invest into getting a real estate license. With your contacts there at your office I am sure you could find a principles and ethics course that is cheaper and before taking the real estate exam I highly recommend a weekend crash course. That was what I did when I lived in So Cal. I worked full time for a real estate office and supplemented my income with listings and buyers. I didn't sell more than 4 homes the whole time I was down there but a young person really needs the extra income, and I think that would be a good idea for you. Best wishes =) |

what part of CA? if u lived like in metropoli area like San Frincisco, Burbank, when cost of living is higher, i don't see why not ask ing higher, however u income seem to be fair for no college exp and right out of H.S. Minmumer wage is like 6 something, but is really depend what city, area u work at. |

Sounds to me like you should see what others in the same real estate gig are making... think of it this way, If the average home is $300k, that means they are pulling in 15k to 18K (depending on their commision rate) on each house they sell that is listed and sold through them. Now figure out how much your piddly wage is in comparison to what they are pulling in... pathetic huh? Maybe you should be looking for a job with an broker that will pay a bit better... then use that as leverage to obtain a high wage with the current one!
No one should have to work 2 jobs to live... |

Retail doesn't pay well until you get to the management level. You would be doing very well to get more than $9 per hour. |

As of January 1, 2002 the CA minimum wage is 6.75. I think that an experienced retail sales assciate could go for 8-8.50. Ask for 9.00 if that is too much they won't just say no...they will say something like "we were thinking more of x.xx". Never lowball yourself on money. If they want you they will work with you. |

That sounds about accurate. Ok here's the thing - To start out with most entry lvl admin people make about $10-$11 an hour.
If you go work for a small company, especially retail, you're not going to make nearly as much. My bet is that if you work retail you'll make about $8.00 an hour.
(Yeah, minimum wage is less than $6.00/hr if I recall correctly. Might be state related though. )
I say stick it out with this job. If you change jobs you'll have to start all over again and work your way up. Your current job may have advancement opportunities in the future. The longer your with the company the better your pay will be.
NEVER TRADE A DECENT JOB FOR A DEAD END JOB. You want to move up, not down in life >.< If for no other reason; It'll look good on your next resume.
Go with a Medium size company and ask for $11.00 an hour if you decide to switch. (That's for entry lvl admin positions). If you go with a small company, you'll hit what's known as a 'glass ceilling' - meaning there's no advancement opportunities. If you're in a large corporation, you'll get lost among the paper work and might not be properly rewarded for your hard work.
Settling down in a company and moving up is the best way to go b/c you get free on the job training, you know everyone so there's not the stress of switching jobs, and you might make even more money.
Good Luck! |

Well as far as i kno its 5.15 an hr erwhere, but i'ad ask at least 6 dollars with ur skills and all that tha least u should puti n for and then prove to them that ur worth every penny thay pay!! |

California minimum wage is $6.75 an hour and a trained ape could sell clothes and work a cash register so I'd say around $8 would be right. |

You're fresh out of high school and you don't have a college degree that's good enough for your experience. Don't expect high pay without a degree to back it up. Just get the second job and see where that takes you |
