There are two points of view.
Both my sons left school at 16 years of age ., so didn't earn much money.
We asked our sons for a certain amount of money per week, I showed them how to wash their clothes, iron them and change their beds and keep their bedrooms tidy. BUT, we put the money into bank accounts for them, so when they left home in their twenties they each had a lump sum to take with them.
Their, now, wives are so grateful that my sons are self sufficient.
If you do need your sons board to help with the bills, then ask him to find out what it would cost him to live in a rented room the cost of food etc, then deduct a certain amount of money from that, that way you will be both getting a fair deal.
But insist he does some of the chores around the house, especially if you are working. |

None.
Just make him pay for his own food, help around the house and pay some bills.
But I don't think that's the answer you're looking for... |

Depends how old and how much he earns? |
|

That would depend on how many people are living in the home. If there are 4 people in the house have him pay 1/4 the amount of actual rent. If there are 6 people in the house have him pay 1/6 of the rent. I have a twenty yr old son still living at home plus 3 other children that are under age which makes 5 of us in the house so my son pays 1/5 of what my actual rent is. The rest of the bills; elec., cable, phone, can be done the same way. I hope this helps. |

Depends upon his income really..When i lived at home,my mum insisted she have half my wages..Didn't like it much but i was still better off than finding my own place,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

How old is your son, and does he work?
If he is older than 16 and has sort form of income then Id reckon about £200-£250 a month is reasonable to ask of him.
When I lived with my parents and had a full time job that's what I gave and also, I always bought my own food and things like shampoo, toothpaste etc. |

Making you son pay house keeping is a good thing even if you don't need the money, It's what he is going to have to do in the future a lot so it's wise to prepare him. 25% of his take home pay is more than fair and I would insist that he pays it. |

How much did your family ask you when you used to live with em?
Were you happy to pay them ?
You shouldn't ask around, have a chat with your son and find an agreement with him. |

I always think 1/3 to house 1/3 to savings and 1/3 to spend is a great idea.
It worked for me when I first started working and works for the teenager in this household now. |

hi
charge him approx 1 third , that leaves him a fair amount ,you could also out of that 1 third put £10 to £20 in a savings account for him , with out saying then when he does strike out on his own he will have a bit of money in reserve , or towards a car or other big expenditure,
if you go to high he may decide its cheaper to rent his own,
hope this helps

I think £30 per week is fair. You want to teach him the value of money but still let him enjoy his money while he can before he settles down and gets his own place. |

That really depends upon your own attitude. Some parents won't take payment, especially if their children remain in education. If not, some expect the childen to start saving, others charge a fair proportion of rent/food/bills so they have the responsibility of paying their way.
If you are providing food, then at least £50 a week wouldn't be unreasonable. But what do YOU consider to be a fair amount? |

25% of his take home pay... |

Is that £180 a week?
I would say no more than £50 a week, but somewhere in the £30 to £50 range is probably about right.
Food and household bills aren't cheap these days and if it is just you and your son who live there that will be adding 25% onto your council tax bill.
Even at £50 a week that is a lot cheaper than he would pay if he moved out. |
|

mona lisa
|
i would say 40.00 a month you are then being more than fair then if he moans at that you will be in the position of saying you won't find any place cheaper that that |

Depends how old he is and what his circumstances are. If he sticks through school and college whilst he is living with you then I dont think he should pay. However if he is living with you and has got a full time job then he should pay lodge. |

i reckon about £30 a week would be fair with that wage
but if he takes advantage ie: eats you out of a home runs up a big bill id make him contribute more |

I'm Pretty sure that the legal limit you can take is no more than a quarter of there total income. |
