It doesn't sound cold, but you need to be a legal adult to open a bank account without parental consent or influence (meaning that even if you found a bank that allowed 16 year olds to open a savings account, for example, your parents still have legal authority to request the balance).
However, a minor may purchase a savings bond without their parents, and I believe they may purchase non-reloadable Visa gift cards. |

I concur with most of the response I have read that the age of sixteen altho some states or maybe it's banks require you to he eighteen.
But as some of the other response had stated it's best to check each bank that you would like to deal with to find out what they require and to also find out about charges ( meaning monthly charges then if they have a per check charge and also how many checks you can write before they begin charging you ( those things are what I have personally run up against in the past is why I say ask questions until you are happy with the answers altho some of the answers will of course vary from one bank or financial institution to the next but hey it never hurts to ask and ask a question again until you are happy with the answers you receive )) |

It various with the state you live in and the policies of the financial institutions in that jurisdiction. There is no particular straight cut answer. |

I had one when I was 16. I really think you just need a driver's license and that was how old I was when I got one. |

Bank of America lets students open "Student Checking" Accts. at the age of 16, and your parent does not have to be on the Acct. what so ever. |
