easy rule for you to follow would be to never ever spend coins, only bills. So when ever you get home, the coins you have in your pocket goes into a bottle or jar, that will be the easiest way from such a small amount of money. If you were getting more money, I would say, don't spend anything smaller than a $5 dollar bill, and put that into a jar, but that is not going to work in your case. Change only, but you will be surprised at how fast that will grow. |

Set up a budget. You aren't working with a lot of money, but this is a great time to learn how to manage whatever funds you do have. That way, later in life, you're less likely to get into huge debt.
You need a little money for everyday essentials, right? Figure out what you buy every day that's really necessary and set aside the cash to get these things.
Also, determine a set percentage that you can put into savings every time you get money. I like putting 10 percent into short-term savings and 10 percent into long-term savings. The short-term is for small things that I'm saving up to buy. The long-term is for rainy days, unexpected emergencies, et cetera.
Leave the savings at home or put it into a bank/savings account. I keep the short-term at home so that, when I get enough to buy what I'm saving up for, I can grab it and go get my new [whatever].
If you can't reach into your pocket and grab all of your cash, you can't spend it on impulse purchases.
Another tactic is to wait one day for every dollar that the impulse purchase will cost you. If you want a five-dollar gadget that you see at the mall, make yourself wait five days before you buy it. If you've forgotten all about that thing at the end of the period, then you obviously didn't want or need it very badly. Look, you've just saved five bucks without sacrificing something important. |

Every single time you get money, split it into thirds:
1/3 you can spend right away if you want
1/3 you spend at the end of the week
1/3 you put in savings account that you don't touch.
It's about consistency--- if you do this every single time you get money (and the first couple times will feel stupid because a third of 10 bucks is crap) you will be on a roll fast.
Is there a bank close by so you can literally bank 1/3 of your allowance immediately? |

When you get your money, say $15, give $10 to your mom or dad to hold it for you to save and ask never to give them back to you unless something very critical. If you don't have the money, you don't spend it. But you deserve a little spending money, so spend the $5 and save the rest. Do this every day. If you get $10, have your mom save $7 for you, you only can spend $3 or keep the $3 each day until a few weekends later so you can buy something big.
Meanwhile, you had saved up a lot of money which your mom or dad is holding for you. They can become the authorized guardian of your savings account and put the money in your name at a bank.
I hope you establish a good habit on spending and saving. Learn to buy things you need, not buy thing you just want. You understand between "need" and "want", don't you? |
