How to avoid Union dues?
I am working for a hospital that has a union. I have worked in the past for unionized hospitals, however I know you can have your union dues reduced to a bare minimum, and in the past I wrote them a letter. I cannot find that letter anymore, but does anyone have an idea where I can find a sample letter like that?
Additional Details
I know you cant really opt out of the union, but you can somewhat control what they are using the money for. It would be a reduced rate, not the full amount, I am aware of that. Yes, you give up the right to vote, but I dont really care about that at all.

Under the Beck ruling, you are entitled to ensure that your dues are used only for collective bargaining and ensuring that your rights in the workplace are covered (grievances, etc.). You may write to the union and ask them to calculate what portion of your dues are used for such non-collective bargaining activities such as contributions to candidates, etc. You can also ask them to stop taking money out for dues that go to these activities.

You can try to get your union dues reduced, but keep in mind, that union helped negotiate your pay rate, benefits and working conditions. If you're taking advantage of the items they negotiated, you need to pay your full dues. Usually a percentage of your pay rate.

Get out of the union. Unions are voluntary and have cost the US a lot of money in higher prices for goods and services. Hope you can get out of it.

Please don't get me wrong at one time unions were good things, now they seem to be too corrupt.

Get out of the Union.
Wal mart is the only non union supermarket in our area.
Thank goodness for them.
Unions just make our everyday expenses skyrocket.

dont pay dues then u can't work there..i wopnder how much money people would earn in this country if there wasnt unions? probably just as much as they make in mexico or indonesia...support unions does a family good in crunches... remember there wouldnt be a need for unions if employers just treated people right in the first place. these days employers treat employees better but for years was all about thier buck and didnt care about workers and abused them accordingly

Kiki
You will have to look through your union bylaws, your employment contract, etc. I am a union member but I am aware that if I wanted to I could get a refund for the portion of my union dues that are put toward political action. It wouldn't amount to much, but it's just an example that you can sometimes "get out of" part of the union dues. However, I agree with the person on here who said keep in mind your union negotiated your pay, benefits, etc.

Then why belong to the union at all?

Murzy
once you've signed that union enrollment card, there is little you can do since you've elected them to negotiate on your behalf. the union is a business like any other and they have expenses, too. in a rare hardship, they might reduce your dues but unlikely.

You really need to find a job that isnt' unionized, they do exist.
Unions at one time were great when it came to helping people in really rotten conditions like mining or in the automobile industry when the lines were dangerous situations but what they do now is basically take your money and make you go on strike when you dont' want to... there are plenty of non-union jobs out there find one.

you dont have to pay them at a call payroll

Belonging to a union is like having a disease for which there is no cure. First ,most unions back the blindly back the Democratic party, and do so with our money, regardless of how bad the administration is.
Take the Clinton gang for example, it was during his time in office that NAFTA was passed, and regardless of who submitted the program, he had the option to veto this job killing legislation, and didn't.
Second, when the Clinton presidential library was constructed, not one union contractor was involved, yet they back the party.
Next, I joined the union in 1950, and even after being retired for twenty years, I still have to pay union dues to be able to have the secondary hospital insurance, plus over $90.00 premium a month. Not c
