To quote Bernstein in the movie Citizen Kane, there's no secret to making a lot of money, if all you want to do is make a lot of money. That movie was one of the best meditations on the meaning of wealth that I have ever seen.
Put aside your personal interests in things that don't pay well, and go to business school. Read the Financial Times every day, invest. Learn how the world of money and capitalist markets work. Then you can profit from it.
Or -- find a niche in the economy and fill it with a good or a service or a raw material that everyone needs. For example, in the last ten years yoga became big because of Madonna -- now a shop that sold yoga outfits has so many international subsidiaries that it is going on the stock exchange.
I tried to go that route, studied economics at university for a couple of years. But I found my values and the way I thought about things kept conflicting with Adam Smith. So I went into another field, that does not make as much money. I do miss the money, the grass is always greener. But I did follow what I believed to be true.
The other way to make a lot of money, so they say, is to follow your dreams and true abilities, and really do what you believe in, and then it comes to you by default, so people like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron and Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart and many other high profile celebrities and business people are all millionaires or billionaires because they followed their natural talents.
So there it is. Go work for a bank, or invent/create buy/sell something everyone wants/needs. |
