Just a couple of random ideas that people told me .... prepare your own lunches everyday, do your groceries in one go at ALDI or those types of shop, discontinue unnecesary memberships (magazines that you don't read etc)....

I didn't say I follow them ... but I think they're good ideas...

Learn to cook if you are presently buying prepared foods. Shop for clothes at thrift stores. Never buy any clothes that need drycleaning except a suit. Turn the thermostat down and put on a sweater. Wash laundry in cold water. Never buy anything for its regular price if you can help it, wait for a sale and stock up a bit . Don't buy books, magazines, movies, CDs--you can get all those at the library for free. Listen to the radio for music. If your car is worth more than say $5,000, sell it and pay off the loan, buy a good used car, put the difference between the loan payoff and the money you got from the car in the bank to pay for repairs later, and ask around for a good mechanic. Keep putting 1/2 of your car payment amount in that account for car repairs and if you need it, it's there, if not it's good for other emergencies. Money you didn't know you had: never spend coins. At the end of the day, take any coins from your pocket or purse and put them in a jar. You may be surprised how fast it adds up.

First put some money away each week for future needs like the kids' college. Then pay mortgage, car loan, utilities, 401k loan in that specific order.

Only after you have paid your commitments can you buy food, etc. The amounts you spend on these are discretionary and you have the greatest control here.

Make sure you exercise greater discretion in determining needs vs. wants. Do you really need a landline and cell phone? Do you really need a TV and cable?

Make lunches for school/work. Make from scratch (homemade bread costs 1/3 of a loaf at the store, salad dressing costs 1/4 of a bottled brand), not prepared or a mix. Don't let anything go to waste - use one box of cereal/jar of ??/bottle of ketchup/whatever before opening another. Let your child choose ONE snack per shopping trip, set up a special time/event to enjoy it and that's it for the week. Do not take a child shopping with you - it is cheaper to hire a sitter! Mend/repair first - and don't replace what is worn out unless you genuinely need it. Thrift shop for clothes - and wait until you really need something.

Do not wear your heels while driving - it wrecks the backs of the shoes. Wear tennies and change at work to keep them new & nice much, much longer!

get a second job and pay off that debt.

If you lost your job that 401K loan would come due immediately.

You didn't give any numbers so I'll have to be general.
Get on a written budget. Cancel any cell phones, cable and any other luxury. You need to be paying on the neccisities of life.
Pay in this order: Food, mortgage, electricity, gas, household bills and then credit cards. In other words, you and the kids need to eat and have a place to live. Everything else may have to wait. If the car is worth more than you owe then great. Of course, it won't be. Cars drop in value like a rock. If you can sell that car and get enough of a loan to pay off the difference and provide for a cheap, dependable clunker do it. Not having a car payment will open up worlds for you. Work extra or get another job if it pays off. If you must spend more on child daycare than you can make with a second job or overtime the don't. Making 10 bucks and spending 12 bucks on daycare won't work.
BTW, where is the father? He should be helping here. If he isn't you need a lawyer. You know that if you can win a judgement they can garnish his wages if he doesn't pay. Look into it.

I read a lot of good advice about shopping at ALDI and making your meals at home. Taking advantage of sales is a great idea. I know what it's like to have limited funds. I start every month with a budget. I calculate how much I spend typically on various items (food, mortgage, loans, kids' necessities, etc.). It is good to show you where your major expenses are and where you can cut back. It gives you a geat idea about your financial status. Then you can feel more comfortable spending money as necessary, knowing how much you will have at the end of the month. You should also consider opening a savings account. It's a safe way to invest. It only takes about twenty dollars to start and interest rates are only about 3% but it does add up over time. Bonds are another option. You spend like $25-$50 for $100 bonds. YOu get checks monthly for interest rates. After 10 to 30 years, you also get you $100 back. Just make sure you don't retrieve that money unless you absolutely need it! as your financial status improves you can consider riskier investments like stocks.
I hope these ideas help. Good luck, darling!

you can cook your own meals. buy at a cheaper store. buy all at once like once every 2 paycheck. you can also try to maybe bake cookies and sell them, a sort of little business to add to your income. look around you and think what they need and maybe you can sell them what they need at an affordable price. and if you have a little extra, you can save it and place it in the bank so the money will grow. learn how to save in little ways. it will slowly add up.

David M
You need to live within your means. Something that it sounds you haven't done with the 401K loan and car loan. It's too late now, but next time you buy a car, get a nice used car instead of taking out a loan. In the meantime you need to cut back on spending and pay this debt down as soon as you can so you can begin really saving. Good luck!

If you get Earned income credit ask your employer to add it to your paycheck. If you get large refunds change your withholding so your check grows a little. Take a second job even if it only pays a little. Some ideas are early morning paper route, baby sitting Saturday nights or cleaning people's houses evenings or weekends. If you can earn an extra $200 a month it will help. Get rid of some typical bills that are luxuries like cable TV.

I'm assuming that your house payment is probably your largest expense. Can you possibly share your house with a roommate, in order to cut your living expenses?

In my town, the local community college hosts international students from China and Japan, and if you provide them with a room, you get paid about $500 per month. If you provide meals, you get paid more.

These are great students - very hard working and responsible, and they're screened by the college.

They also might help you out with babysitting or housework, making your life a little easier.

I was single mom for many years, so I understand what you're going through.

grow your own food anyway u can. Turn down hot water. Drink water- cut out sugar use, it'll calm you and make you fitter.
Draw no cash, use debit sparingly if at all. No loans.
Aim for no debt, and a years worth of expenses covered after that in a budget.

One suggestion is to get to the library for old and current issues of magazines like Woman's Day and Family Circle. They often feature articles on organizing, saving money, etc. If you have health insurance (or don't) consider a flex spending account through your employer if it's offered. It will help reduce your taxes on co-pays and over counter medications and such. It makes more sense to pay a few bucks a week and have that tax free money available to you. Consider running a business even if you don't pull a profit. There are strict IRS rules about what's a business versus a hobby but if you abide, you will be able to write off certain things. Home businesses are a target for audits so make sure to operate totally legally. Whether you sell on Ebay or direct mail or perform services using your skills you can make out with extra income and tax advantages. You can even hire your kids to do some things for the business if they are old enough... licking envelopes, cleaning the office, etc. Mainly go through your budget and look for things to cut back on if not cut out. The important thing is to repay any debts and get ready to save because you can't get wealthy by owing money. Things will always come up so be prepared for them with an emergency fund. Dave Ramsey (books and tv) has good advice. Consider energy efficient options like programmable thermostats and green products for your home... not only using them but maybe building a business around them. Don't be afraid to shop discount stores and Ebay and thrift shops. Have cheap breakfasts instead of elaborate dinners from time to time and have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or $1 frozen entrees for lunch. Stay away from vending machines. Make your own cleaning products instead of buying them. Swap a night of tv viewing for a night of board games with the kids. Consider Netflix instead of cable channels. Bundle your tv, internet and phone for discounts. Get rid of cell phone plans and get a prepaid phone if you NEED one. Remember that every $1 adds up. Comparison shop online for things (bottomdollar.com, mysimon.com, Ebay.com). There are many things you can do so learn to do many things in order to establish a lifestyle where love becomes more important than money.

Take out the amount of cash you will spend in a week. it's much easier to keep track of it when you physically have it and see it go down.

If you have decided to get out of the loan trap, i am sure you will. There has been a lot of very good answers on saving money. Ultimately you need to get the math right. Take 2-3 days off alone and do some planning. The mind is like a sponge the more you squeeze it, it will give you more ideas.
Once you have made a plan talk to your friends to get their views of how practical it is. Many minds is better that one,
And most importantly once you have come to a conclusion as to how you are going to do it STICK TO THE PLAN, no matter what happens.
i went through the same phase, i did on line trading. initially i lost some money, but now it has been 2.5 years since i am debt free.....
debt free is not just a thought,,, one can really live debt free.
good luck.

First, set up a bank account that you can't access through the ATM. Then, get your employer to put at least 10% of your income into that account on payday, when they pay you into your normal account. After a few weeks, you'll be used to living on less money and your spending will adjust.

That will become your savings. Wait til you get a few thousand dollars in there, and then consider putting a few thousand in a mutual or managed fund. See a financial advisor (start by asking at your bank, either if they have one on staff, or if they can recommend one) or check out morningstar.com, which is a website that has information on that sort of thing. It's handy if you want to do it yourself.

I always buy groceries in bulk, and shop at factory sales outlets to get big discounts on basic groceries. Check out any of the factories near where you live and see if they have an outlet. I got 16 cakes of soap for 10 cents each a few weeks ago.

I ALWAYS take my own lunch to work with me. It saves me a fortune. I also grow my own vegies in my backyard, which saves me heaps at the supermarket, because for half the year I don't buy onions, potatoes, pumpkins, zucchinis, or snow peas. If you've got the room, its good. I've currently got a pot of silverbeet on my front porch.

Pay off and get rid of the car loan. Consider selling the car and getting a cheaper used one if possible. Car loans are a huge waste of money. Alternatively, you could talk to your lender about consolidating the car loan into the homeloan. That could be an option.

Best wishes

Actually it is NOT obvious that you are not in a position to get out of ANY of the expenses you list. Are you SURE you could not replace the car with a less expensive one? Are you making NEW contributions to the 401(k)?

The FIRST thing you should do is make a WRITTEN budget each month. You need to PLAN what you will do with EVERY PENNY you bring in. Most people would be surprised how much money they don't even know what they did with.

REDUCE spending. Defer purchases. Cut down.
Reuse, recycle.
Don't take out any more loans. Good that you have no credit card debt, but the rest of your finances don't look good.

Ms Common Cents
Been there done that. Here's are some highlights of what helped me:

1. Take your lunch to work
2. Shop sales (I brought most of my daughter's clothes and shoes @ Target and Dillards at end of season for 75% off or more; also had to purchase a lot of b-day and other gifts when stuff was on clearance so I kept a "gift" closet)
3. Depending on where you live, there's always free things to do for recreation. Library, park/picnic.
4. I ride a vanpool to work and drive literally no more than 30 miles a week (less than one tank of gas a month).
5. When needed, air conditioner on 78; heater on 68
6. Freecycle.... if you can't use it, give it away

I didn't find coupons to be that much help because sales were usually cheaper.

Maverick
ok so i spend @ least 300 bucks for a family of 3, thats buying store brands, using coupons and of course the most important divide and make a budget so you know what you need to get exactly if you really need it, it works for me, i dont buy detergents or bathroom and cleaning items but every 2 months, then i stock up on canned corn stuff like that when there is a sale so i dont have to worry about that the next month, and i but meats and at least spend 50-60 bucks in meats like groundbeef, tips chicken, for variety and make 1 LB bags with ziplogs that way i know and make numbers on how much i will be cooking and what during this month, i have a list that i dowloaded from:

well nickel and dimes kill most folks on a tight budget == take a real hard look at your daily lifes and insure you are not doing some little things -- example say you stop at the corner timesaver on the way to work to grab a quick coffee and paper -- this could be 3 dollars a day == if you have paper delievered and take a go cup from home could save 2 dollars a day -- same say you eat out every day for lunch -- how about plan your meals so you can take luch twice weekly -- could say say 10 dollars!!! just be proud you are not over your head in debt!!! good luck!!!!

It will take time to come out of this situation. But you can save money by limiting your needs although you must be doing so, but just in case revise them. Check for all deduction that you are liable for so that you can lower the tax which is paid on the income. Or find some investment plans.

My husband and I are living check to check as well. I have learned to trim any expenses where possible. We turned off our home phone since we have cells, cut our cable to barest package, have stopped eating out except for rare instances when one of us is out of town for business, etc.. Use coupons and price match groceries when possible, it really adds up!! You should check out Dave Ramsey...since reading his books and watching his TV show we have learned a lot! He says live on rice and beans, beans and rice until you get out of debt, and that includes your car. Check him out!!

Worka
Consider clipping coupons for groceries and other services, utilize coupons in the back of the yellow pages for discounts on services from carpet cleaning, hair care, car wash, painting and more.

Gather all of your loose change, and deposit the funds into your savings account. Automatically deposit $5 per period into an annual savings account such as a "holiday club" account which can be withdrawn at year end.

Pack lunches for you and your family, make your own beverages.

Good Luck.

tina4545
Do you buy a cup of coffee everyday? Make your own and bring it with you. Same goes for snacks if you are constantly spending .50 cents to $2 everyday make your own and pack your own lunches. Talk to the people you pay your bills to and ask them if they can reduce the payments so you can start saving a little everyday for a rainy day! Try to live within your means and you should be better off!

anything you can money by doing yourself, you save big bucks. there's also places like supertarget where they sell meat (not regular),bj's get membership and get more for your buck, take public transportation and not worry about insurance for a car. go to bookstores and read it there for free. read a self help book and buy coffee(dunkin donuts) at a small size and AVOID starbucks. last make soups they last longer.

Try investing! I joined one company that allocate the investment to Uranium, it pays really good return. I got daily interest of 2% of my investment, and it's 7 days a week! so in a week, if you invest 100USD, you will get 14 dollars!
You can withdraw your investment anytime you want, and the minimum amount to invest is only 1 dollar! So you don't have to worry about your investment. Right now, I have invested USD250, and I got 5 dollar a day without having to work hard!!
Don't know where to start? you could just follow the process below:
1. Open new e-gold account, you could register for free at https://www.e-gold.com/newacct/newaccoun...
2. Credit your e-gold account by trading your dollar to e-gold using e-gold trading merchant, e.g: http://www.moneycentralmarket.com/
3. Go to http://www.klikdisini.com/safeinvestment and register new account, minimum deposit is USD 1 dollar.
4. Just wait and see, the money will generate profit itself, if you invest more, you could get more profit. well, there's a saying, spend money to make money, rite? ok, try it out and see for yourself, you won't believe your eyes ;)
or if you wanna make money really fast, like a day, you might wanna try http://www.klikdisini.com/fxprofits but it's only for short term plan ;)

K D
Get direct deposit and only take the cash you need. If the money is not in your hands you cant spend it

150 fast.

Don;t go out with colleague too often because when go out, of course you must spend for the meal and drink, charge service tax as well.....so don't......
One more is don't use car if not more than 2 km from your house, just walk, so u can save your fuel because nowadays fuel fee become more higher.

I suppose you can

1. see whether you can refinance your house payment with better interest rate

2. Cut power and water bill by using less... practise saving electricity and water e.g. switch off power source of appliances when not in use, boil water and store in a warmer, take shorter showers. Use less air con/heater. Recycle water e.g. use water from rinsing cloths for washing the floor, flushing toilet.

3. Cut Grocery bills by cutting on items that can be do away with and replaced. e.g. no potato chips, ready made pasta sauce, buy whatever food that is on sale. Cut out coupons.
If you dont use the house phone much ,just rely on your cell phone.

4. Sell things you no longer use on eBay or forum

5. Buy second hand stuff from people or use the public library for the kids toys, books, etc.

6. Bulk purchase items that is frequently used if the rate is cheaper.

7. Try to eat out less.

8. Set goals for yourself. Figure out how much you spent on stuff every month. Think about how to cut the expense for each of the item listed above. And figure out how much you can cut. e.g. Goal cut Monthly grocery by $10 this month.

9. Put the savings each month away for a rainy day.

10. When you have save enough money
