I have around £11,000 of debt, I'm 23yrs old, don't over indulge myself. £5,500 student loans from when I left uni (to pay back imediate.) plus, bank overdrafts and others? I work full time, dont want to file bankrupcy. Pay my taxes, rent and bills on time - but debts becoming trouble, any advice?
Thanks!

It may be worth trying a free debt management company such as Payplan. They will have a look through your finances in the same way that the CAB have done for you, but may be able to set up a debt management plan (DMP) or other alternative debt solutions and debt advice to that which you received from the CAB.

Bankruptcy is always an option - but not necessarily the best way forward.

Try Payplan here:

www.payplan.com or give them a call on 0800 917 7823

Hope this helps - they really helped me!

1. I advise you take a second job
2. Don't spend more than you need to live day to day.
3. Have the willpower to follow through....

Good Luck

I would not cancel credit cards, it might damage your credit score.

Filter out the scam replies that you have plainly got.
There is no "easy" way out of debt.
You have to;
a) Maximise your income
b) Minimise your outgoings
After that, you bite the bullet and work it all off.

Stop unnecessary spending. Spend only that much your pocket allows.
Don't use your credit cards.

First stop charging and creating debt. You have spent enough. Now that you can live on your pay. You need more money to pay off debt. Get a 2nd full time job -- you really do not need idle time being bored and go shopping for fun and excitement... Just think that if you file for bankruptcy it willl follow you for the rest of your life. Know that little home you been dreaming about---FOR GET IT No one will give you the loan. The two jobs will only be for 2 years not the rest of your life...

Call your creditors and work out a plan to pay off your debt. Get a budget and stick to it. Tear up your credit cards. Stop unnecessary spending.

Find ways to get lower interest rates, Transfer your debt to lower-interest instruments, IF you have any credit cards it might actually work to explain your situation and simply ASK for a lower rate, tell them your serious to pay off all your debt, sometimes it works, they give you a better rate, but they won't if you don't even try to ask. Also, is there a way you can share your accommodations to help pay the rent? You're still young, is it possible to move in with your parents for a year or two, save a bundle of money on rent so you can pay off your debt. Do everything you can to save money, make your own nutritious lunches with groceries, instead of buying lunch from "restaurants" and convenience stores for snacks, and cook your own foods "from scratch" instead of "entrees"-- for example, you could make a great lasagne that could last 2 days at half the cost of buying it already made like a frozen dinner. Also, when you buy clothes, don't buy famous marketing names, just buy good clothes without a famous brand name. Do everything you can to keep costs low, and use your income to pay down debts.

Good simple tips in avoiding urgent need for cash (at the end of article) http://loans.luxuryabout.com/?p=5

ask the C.A.B for advice on an IVA, if you cant do this there really is no option other then to either find a good loan you can afford to pay off to cover it all, or file for bankrucpy, you cant get rid of debt and even if you did file for bankrupcy your student loan would still remain. Thats the real student loan btw, not the one you have to pay back immediatly.

I went to the C.A.B, I have similar debts to you, slightly lower but a student loan of £16000 in addition to my £10000 loan which I had toi live off before working out the benefits office made a mistake and I have missed out on £5000 in benefits but I will never see this money as I threw away the paper info they sent me that proved they made a mistake. Insted I am left with a huge debt. I used to work but I am not working enough to claim tax credits so cant afford to work, the disgusting fact is it "pays" more to be on benefits. So now I will be doing voluntary work until I have enough skills to get a job with a salary over 10K. in London where I live. (dont let anyone tell you a first class degree is an entry to a well paid job!)

Go back to the C.A.B, see someone else and also contact the bank and ask about an IVA, say your going to speak to the C.A.B soon and they will listen to you, they listen to the C.A.B and them listening to you could prevent alot of paperwork.

The first thing you do is tear up your credit cards and live within what you earn after you set aside funds to pay down your debts. If you can't live within these rules, then you need to get a second job and concentrate on paying off your debts. If you don't pay down your credit card debt, the interest charges will make your debt grow faster than you will be able to pay it down.
