How to live on $48,000?
I'm actually still in college and I'm just curious how people do it. I've read on careerbuilder.com how the median income of a family in U.S. is $48,000 (which I can't believe). I just find it hard to believe that couples can raise a family with that income.

It also depends on how you manage your money and where you live. My girlfriends parents live in Freeport Maine make about 60K a year. Right now it's just them in the house and they're struggling alittle. They're not in terrible shape, but they could be better.

Me, I'm a college student in central NH. I make 26K a year. That's enough for me to support my girlfriend and for us to live comfortably. I'm even able to put some money into savings each month.

Then there's my bestfriend who lives on Long Island. Her and her boyfriend make about 50K. They are just barely, barely getting by.

It all comes down to how you hadel your money and where you live.

Many, many people live on far less and still have quality lives. Even if both parents make $10 an hour that still only comes out to $40k a year. And many may only make $8 an hour.

Now of course, these people arent living in $200,000 homes and penthouses. Nor do they rush out and buy every single new dvd. They don't have blackberrys, mp3 players or Iphones. But these are all luxury's, not something that you NEED to live and raise a family.

They may cook a lot of meals instead of eating out, and buy clothes that are not name brand.
But what it boils down to is they live well with what they have. I've never made more than $20K a year and own my own home, never been on food stamps or any other assistance. Just watch my spending and don't waste money on extras.

My family lives on 47K a year. I own my home and both my cars. We don't live frugally, but we definately are not extravagent. You must evaluate your needs vs. your wants. Do you need a $4 cup of coffee everyday, or will a homebrew be sufficient? 4 bucks a day X 5 workdays a week X 50 workweeks in a year = $1000. Don't try to keep up with the jones' and you will be fine. Ditch the credit cards and the high rent status apartment.

They do not live above their means, actually, they live well well below their means. Using coupons to purchase, government aid, city/state funded housing, and thriftiness. No fancy anything (food, vacation, education, etc.) and thinking wisely and economically before every single purchase (from a pack of gum to a mattress).

Happy go Lucky:)
Familys live on much less then that. With out help from the state. It about what's important to a person. You don't have to have the best car, the biggest house or the finest things. Don't live above your means. Don't get credit cards, save for your car. Pretty much don't buy it if you can't afford it. It's so sick to me these people live in big fancy houses and drive fancy cars. They work so much and don't have time for there kids, because they have to work so hard to pay for it all. Kids are the main thing, they need your time more than they need things.

It actually depends on where you live. My household income (my fiance and I - no kids) was about $40,000 while living and Pittsburgh and we were fine. Now, if I made that and lived in NYC or LA, I would be screwed and probably be living on the streets. Our household income is about $52,000 in North Carolina now and we are fine. We have a nice apartment for about $650/month and we only drive Honda Civics. So we don't have anything real fancy, but it is doable. I think it is about where you live and what type of livestyle you live.

Not everyone lives in downtown Manhatten, my household income is arund 50k and we live quite well. The cost of living is low here.

We just bought a new 42" LCD HDTV and a Playstation 3 with a bunch of games for xmas. Im currently looking a new ring for my GF. We dont clip coupons, we go on vacations if we have time, I have 3 kids as well. Its good not to have to pay 3000$ for a 1 room apt for the rent lol. Come to OKC, 500$ will get you 3 bedrooms

My Fiance works and makes around 45Gs and I work 3 days a week and make about thousand dollars a months. I also attend school. We live in Southeast Michigan. We just bought a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath 1300 square foot house in a nice Oakland County neighborhood. He drives a New Mazda Speed and I drive a 2000 mercury cougar. We have Tv, internet, cell phones. Take care of 2 cats, we eat out a couple times a month. Not only do we live comfortable, but I am only 21 and he is 23. So Yes living on 48,000 dollars is possible. I would live small because when the children come, I want to raise them and Not have some "stranger" raise my kids.
I grew up in a family that drove Luxury cars and owned a 500,000 dollar home. However my dad was ALWAYS working and my mom was out with her "friends". My childhood was blessed but parents missed alot. I am happier now, because I have the love that I missed growing up.

$48,000 huh.....Wow, that much? Where would I have to relocate to, to find one of those jobs??

La Vie Boheme
It depends where you live. The standard of living/cost of living makes a big difference.

boy i wish. my husband makes only 21,000 a year. we are a family of 5. no credit cards, no activities of fun like sports or movies, hardly get to go out to eat. my husband makes 10.00 an hour at 40 hours a week. no paid leave, paid sick days or medical insurance. my best friend makes close to that and they are struggling as a family of 4 due to medical costs and cards.
it really depends on your expenses and how you stretch a dollar. how you shop shows how you save. how you budget weekly or monthly depending on when you get paid. budget also toward a way to save for an emergency. listen to a man on the radio named Dave Ramsey or go to daveramsey.com and see if your area has him on the radio. lifestyle, priorities and knowing how you want to live can be your best goals when looking at a financial reason toward a better paying job. also just because the site says you can make that much do not always trust it. my husband was told allot more for his job and it has not happen yet.
