The lending comes from average people buying bonds and governments, investment houses, and others.

it will just get bigger and bigger, and one day the US will not exist and then, there will be no more debt :)
we are borrowing like crazy from everybody as it is,
( form europe, china, japan, mexico) of course we are assholes to Mexico, even though they loan us money and supply a large porton of our oil.
the only way i see thses debts going away, is if the world calls an all out truce and nobody owes anybody money, which to me is the only plausible answer.
the people who suffer for the stupid mistakes of governments are the present and future citizens of that county. |

The US government barrows from the Federal Reserve, so the debt amount your looking at, does not now nor has it ever been paid by tax dollars. By barrowing more every year to operate, the taxpayer dollars actually only pay down the Interest accumulated on the principal of the debt, therefor, the more barrowed, the higher the principal of the loan becomes. |

No, the United States will never be able to pay off the debt. We are lucky to just break-even on the interest. Who lent them the money? People like you and me through issue of bonds. |
