Kaleas | I'm 18, how do I get my first credit card? |
I would like to start building up my credit by using a credit card to pay for things like gas once a month. That way when I go to college next summer, I can finance my own things without having to ask my father.
Who's the best company to get a credit card from for that purpose and what are some things I should know first? Additional Details To those who don't think it's a good idea, I do have my father advising me on this and I'm not the type to go off on a spending spree. I understand how credit and credit cards work. I'm basically looking for the best companies that offer cards, especially for college kids, and the best way to build my credit. |

Secured credit card are special type of credit cards which have some collateral attached with them. Generally the collateral is a bank account or some deposit. Secured credit cards are simply great for those who have less than perfect credit and those who want to start building their credit history.
Secured credit cards generally have an application fee attached with them, so if you want to apply for a secured credit card you will have to shell out some money upfront. In addition to this application fees the secured credit cards have annual fees and relatively high interest rates.
Each secured credit card comes with a credit limit equal to the amount deposited in the credit card. However the secured credit card issuing companies deduct their fees from your deposit as soon as you start using your credit card. Let us look into this point a little further. Supposed you have deposited a sum of $300 in your secured credit card and the secured credit card has an annual fee of $120 the credit card issuing company will deduct this annual fee from your deposit and effectively you will have a credit limit of $180 ($300 - $120)with you initially.
The secured credit card companies report to the three major credit bureaus and hence every spending and repayment on your credit card gets recorded and reflects in your credit report. If you use the secured credit card judiciously, things will be great for your credit history. Though the credit limit associated with the secured credit cards seem pretty low initially, but as the confidence of credit card companies grow on you and your credit rating improves you will see an increase in these credit limits. The secured credit card company might charge some fee for improving your credit limits. Apply online at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/PrePaid_Card.html |

When you get your first credit card, treat it with respect. Unwise use can financially cripple you for a long time.
Your idea of "ONLY for gas" is a good one. That way you are using it ONLY for a neccessity. Consider getting an oil company credit card, then there will be less temptation to abuse it. Then after you've tested yourself for at least 6 months with that card, you can get a "regular" credit card and limit yourself to "ONLY for groceries" for at least 6 months.
To train yourself to NOT spend more than you can afford, take the receipt of what you just purchased and write a check for that $amount when you get home and send it in to the credit card company... think of it as "early payment". This way, you are truly using your credit card as $CASH, and can't get caught up in the interest trap.
Unless you have a REALLY GOOD reason, you should pay the balance due at the end of the month IN FULL.
$Interest paid (and the finance charge) is just good money thrown away... |

When you go to college they will offer you many cards. It sounds like you want to be responsible, but beware!! They can be tempting, and if you get in over your head you could screw up your credit and your future chances at certain jobs, rentals, owning a car or home. Ask your parents about what companies they are established with. They may have good standing and be able to arrange for a card in your name on their account with a set limit each month. |

Citibank was my first credit card. It was easy to be approved as they usually seek out college-age students and usually even have reps at college campuses to get you signed up.
With that said, PLEASE PLEASE be careful with whatever card you get. I, too, thought "I'll just use it for my books and gas..." A few years later, I had amassed over $27,000 in credit card debt. Once you get a card, you will be offered other cards left and right. I also had several department store credit cards. You may think that amount sounds outrageous, but those little things add up. I had to seek credit counseling to get it all paid off.
I hope you are smarter with your card than I was! Remember that everything you buy will cost almost 2x the original price once you pay it off with interest. Make sure it is something you really need, not something you really want.
Good luck to ya!! |

Sounds like you have been advised about the pitfalls of credit cards. If you ONLY want to build credit, then apply for a department store credit card and only buy one or two small ticket items like $20 or less and pay the whole things 100% each month.
You can also apply for a gas card at the gas station like Hess or Mobil.
However, do not build your credit to use a credit card at college for Happy Hour - or even to buy books. The sooner you learn how to pay with cash and dodge the credit card game the better.
Keep 1 credit card later for travel etc.
Meanwhile use CASH for everything except when you are honestly in control of the credit card and do not think it's free money that your parents will pay off for you later. It becomes a bad habit.
Good Luck to you in college!

You can apply for one online. Because you have never had a credit card the interest will be high so I recommend always paying the balance in full every month and don't buy anything you can't pay back. I recommend Chase if you are looking for a good credit card company. Go here if you need help finding the right credit card

We all think "we will only use this for gas or emergencies." Read all the posters before me, almost every single one is advising you NOT to do it. Isn't that telling you something?
I suggest you read 2 books before you decide on a credit card:
The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
The Millionaire Next Door by Stanley
After reading both those books and you decide you still want a credit card then just accept any offer that comes into your mail. All are basically the same. |

This is what I did...
Go to Macys' apply for a Macy's visa. You can use it anywhere plus you get discounts when you use it in the store...
They start you off with a 500 credit limit, so you can't get into some debit. Becareful with it though.
Good luck! |

you may want to consider a 'secured' credit card, where you deposit the funds and THEN make charges.
You may want to go to a local store, (jewlery stores are good for this) and charge a small items (couple of hundred dollars only) then pay it off right away. Don't make minimum payments (ever). Try to get it paid off in 3 months.
Also, work with your bank and be sure to manage your checking account well. You banker can also advise you on some ways to establish your credit.
Just don't get 'addicted' to credit. I know people in their 50's who are struggling with life long credit card debt. It's no fun, believe me. |
