Me | I'm 23 and I owe more than $175,000, I don't know what to do? |
I'm a graduate student and I have a young baby. I have $50,000+ in student loans with 1 more year of studies remaining. I owe $7,000 in credit card debt. And I own a condo that I owe $110,000 on. Plus, I owe the regime company another $10,000. If I don't pay them, I risk foreclosure.
Right now I have a whopping $13 in my bank account. I'm so stressed out, I don't know what to worry about first. I don't know if I should borrow more to pay down credit cards and the regime, or if that is just going to dig my hole deeper. Any suggestions? Please? |

First, realize that there isn't a quick solution. It will take several months to a year to do this, if not more.
First, cut out extraneous expenses. Got super-ultra 9000 channel dish network television service? get rid of it. Get a simple, basic cable package.
How many cell phones, pagers, etc? try to cut one of them out. Eat out a lot? cut back a bit. 2 or 3 meals can add up, and it might make the difference on paying a bill, or not.
Any expensive hobbies? put it on hold for a few months, or at least cut back on the spending for a while.
as long as you haven't missed the payments yet, you might find that at least one of your debt holders is willing to negotiate. Negotiate a temporary lower rate or even a payment halt with one of the less critical creditors. Then tackle the worst of the outstanding debts-get rid of it. You don't want your money tied up in credit card payments-the interest there is f*$king stupid. Kill those debts ASAP. Of course, you have to have a card or 2 to exist in this modern world, but you do NOT have to carry balances on them. And argue with them about ANY stupid charges. Usually, if you simply request that they not levy a stupid fee, and you are a good customer, you can get rid of it.
Try to do this before the previous temporary agreement expires. This should give you some breathing room.
Once you have that breathing room, save. save save save. Even if it is just a few bucks from each paycheck, save.
Make sure during this period that you keep up with home maintenance, car maintenance and your own (and your family's) health maintenance. Nothing can drain you faster than an unexpected charge to fix something. |

Get to work! Stop everything else, can your gf/ wife work she needs to help out. Sounds like you need to sell the condo, hopefully its worth a little more and you can pay down your C.C. no easy solution (live on the cheap), I think a lot of us are in similar situations.
Our priority is keeping our home, I left school for the time being, we don't go out, rarely if ever get take out forget resturants, pack a lunch, no cable, cheap cellphones, free internet, no clothes shopping, clip coupons. It sucks but at this time we have no other way of doing things. Best of luck. |

First, talk to a FREE Credit Counselor (check Yellow Pages) who deals with these issues every day. They can lead you in the right direction. Second, it's time for a 2nd & 3rd Job. Also, ask your family for help (if you can) ... atleast to watch the baby, while you work. Best Wishes! Hang in There!!! |

Get a job, quit spending and pay down your debt. Get two jobs if you have to. Ask your mother to babysit. |

I think you should get a smaller place for starters....something cheaper to live in monthly....you may also want to contact a consolidation company ....they will combine all your debt into one managable payment a month...you should definately try make additional payments as soon as you can on top of the monthly you will be paying. Do you have a family member who can watch your baby for free while you look for a part time job? Could you maybe babysit another child while you are watching yours...this could bring in some extra cash....you need to have a yard sale or sell some stuff and get a job...maybe you could be a teachers aide so this will not conflict with the time you have with your own child....sorry about your luck...hope it works out... |

call one of those debt relief agencies, they have counselors you can talk to about your bills.
you probably should have waited to buy a condo until you were done with school and rented a cheaper place.
or you could file for chapter 13 or bankruptcy. but it stays on your credit report for 7 years.
student loans are never discharged.btw.
also arent your loans in repayment until 6 months after you graduate? if thats the case don't worry about that because you can get a better job in the field your going into.
DO NOT TAKE OUT MORE DEBT TO PAY DEBT.
it only makes things worse. |

Get a second job and try to keep the regime company debt current - credit cards can't foreclose on your condo, but if the other debt can cause a foreclosure, I would take care of that one first. |

Sell the condo and get some place cheaper, work more hours, and put off school for awhile until your finances are in better shape. |

Contact a debt consolidator. Or try speaking to your cred card companies and see which one has the lowest interest rate and see if you can do balance transfers.
I don't know much about school loans.
Or you can try declaring bankruptcy, in which case you will need to contact a lawyer
So sorry for your probelms |

It's obvious that you cannot afford to pay each the amount you owe. You should pay some on each creditor, even if it's not the entire payment. Perhaps they will see that you are at least trying to pay the debt you owe.
They will probably call you and harass you for the rest of the money, be honest and explain the situation see if they will work with you on repaying the money.
I hope things work out for you. |

Don't you get it??

Two jobs, borrow money and pay off what is important. What about the 50,000 you spent on education. Did you at least get a degree, if so get a job. Easier said than done, but trust and know if I spent that much on college I would be damned if no one hired me. That is one of the reasons for spending all that money, it sure as hell aint to be educated. I could do that myself and pay$0.00 |

I'm assuming most of this can be paid back over the years, whatever you have to pay now and can't afford, work out a payment plan as long as it's reasonable they will do it. Of course you have to increase your income or cut spending. You didn't say what your income is. Your biggest concern is the condo, make sure that gets paid. Don't take out anymore loans. |

Go to one of those community organisations that offer free financial advice. Get them to help you to find a workable solution for you, and act as advocates for you with all the people hounding you for money. You will find that these people actually can get the lenders to lay off so long as you stick to any agreement you make with them through the community group.
Finally, learn from this, ensure that in the future you do not let things get out of hand with your finances.
I wish you all the luck with this. |

Don't borrow to get out of debt. Especially not now. It';s a downhill slope that!!
Sell the condo. Make a real effort to get the best price possible. Paint it. Borrow good furniture to show it off well. Have coffee on when people come over. Put flowers out.
Do it quickly or it may be worthless itself with the number of foreclosures.
try using your skills from post grad to generate income from home. when my babies were little I did editing over the net. It was ultimately flexible and as long as you get the work done you get paid!!! |

I say... worry about your child first. She is number one priority. Make sure she has what she needs but be smart about it. There are so many nutritious options at the grocery store at low cost.
Secondly, I think you need to see a debt counselor. You need to talk to someone about money that knows how to help you with this.
I know it sounds stupid but try not to stress. it is what it is and stressing will not help. Try to put on a happy face for your child and remember that you are doing the best you can. |
