What the check is for (i.e. gift, phone bill, child support, cable, donation). It just serves as a reminder what you wrote the check out for.

it's just a memo for you to remember why you wrote it. so you can leave it black or write: parents, or gift, or something like that

That's just space for you to write something for YOU. It helps you remember what the check was for. Example uses: keep it blank, or write "Merry Christmas!", or "self distruct in 20 days". It's up to you.

The memo space is optional. You can write something there to remind you what the check is for (e.g. "new tires"), or something the payee might need (e.g. your account number).
