set up a standing order out of your bank account to a savings account, £25 a month even.
It will be out of your sight and mind eventualy you'll forget you even have the account. |

just start by saving a little each month, it will soon add up and get you into the habit of saving. once you start it is easy. |

Truthfully a financial adviser could be of better assistance with this question, the reason being, I don't know your debt to income ratio, or what your monthly expenses are and how you spend your extra money. But basically it sounds as if you need to figure out how much you spend on essentials (i.e. bills, rent, ect.) and how much you use as "play-money" (i.e. going out to dinner, movies, random purchases). You should budget your money and give yourself a goal as to how much to spend. Getting a savings account and not using a debit card makes it much more difficult to dip in to your savings. Even if you set yourself a goal of $20.00 a month, eventually it adds up. It depends on what you can afford to set aside, and if there are some sacrifices you are willing to make. Such as a cable bill, if you really don't watch it often you don't really need it. |

Use an automatic deduction from your paycheck. Start small. You won't even notice it after a while. If you're in the US, and have access to a company sponsored 401K, use that vehicle - and see if you company has a matching program. If so, it's free money. If not that, open an IRA. You get a tax break and have access to the money under certain hardships and you'll have money when you retire. Plus, you're investing and will likely grow the money over time.
Beyond that, learn about the basics of investments and finance via radio call in programs (like NPR's Sound Money), etc. |

Automatic drafts work great, even better have a portion of your pay check direct deposited into a saving or mutual fund account. |

look at it this way: paying yourself is like paying a bill. 10-13% of your GROSS income is fine. no excuses. |

try too put whatever you can aside per week or month, don't go overboard just start with a small amount. |

i found that standing order into savings acocunt didnt help, i just transfered it back when i needed luxuries like food.
but also know we live within whatever is in bank account. so now i buy monthly standing order of premium bonds.
ok im not earning interest, but at £50 per month (minimum you can do) I will only need 1 win every 2 years to cover loss of interest. if an emergency comes up I can cash them in and get my money back. |

Ask your employer to pay directly into a long term savings account |

Some time ago now I found myself in the same situation and was desperately trying to save for Christmas .
So, having a current account already, I visited the bank and asked them to open another account for me. Just an ordinary savings account at first.
Then each week (I was paid weekly) I asked them to transfer a small sum into my savings account on the day I was paid. Something like £15 should do it. But because it was a standing order and I wasn't very good at checking what was going on, the amount simply added up! It didn't take too long to adapt to living without the £15 either. I just lived with what I had in my current account...if it wasn't there I couldn't spend it.
Think, if you do the same.... after only 12 weeks you will have £180 without even trying!
Hope this helps |

ask your bank to set up a system where they take a fixed amount each month or week and set it aside then at the end of the year they give u the total back |

I've heard you should pay yourself before you pay your bills. So, if you can afford it, go ahead and put 10% from each paycheck into a savings account. Use the rest to pay bills, buy food, etc. If you put money in savings first then you won't miss it. Just don't go dipping into your savings account. |

Start a spend journal, and note every thing you are spending from a wild night out to lunch. You will be shocked at how much you can live without (or at least spend less on).
Set up a standing order into a high interest savings account for a set amount to be paid in each month - set this for the day you get paid and then you will never really see the money. Set a realistic amount leaving you with enought to live on and extra for the odd night out. Try an online saving account where you can't just pop to the machine if you need a little extra cash, it will reduce the risk of dipping into your savings.
Good Luck! |
