Is your account a joint one? How would your boyfriend have access to it? If it's a joint account just open up a new account with the cheque in your name only.

first off get rid of your b/f if he's not trust worthy...
and a saving account or second bank account sounds good you dont want to cash it as they will prob charge over £100 to do a cheque that size, also if you have it as cash in your house could your boyfriend stumble across it, sounds like a recipe for dissater!!!! |

If you are in the uk try cash converters in most high streets now.Yes they do charge and you will need forms of ID but thenyou have the cash so you can do what you want with it.Hope this helps. |

Open a separate account that's just in your name. It's probably best if you use a different bank and have the statements sent to your job or something so he doesn't find out.
Honestly, I wouldn't share an account with someone who was a compulsive gambler anyway and risk losing my money. |

There are places like CashGenerators and Cash Convertors but they will charge a hefty sum to cash your cheque. Open a savings account with the post office, Abbey or the Co-op and put it there. |

Can you go to the bank of the check writer? Usually, even if you're not an account holder, you can go to the bank where the account is drawn from and cash it, for a fee, of course.
On a second note, every relationship should have 3 accounts: one for each person and a third, mutual account for things like living expenses, food, etc if needed. Even if it is the world's best relationship, there are going to be disagreements over ideas of how to spend splurge money. So, each needs their own stash. |

Open a new bank account solely in your name.
Perhaps choose a different bank to the one where you bank with your boyfriend and arrange to receive statements online or get them set to return to branch (as bf may be suspicious if bank statements arrive for you!). If you choose a savings account ensure it is one where you have access to the funds easily i.e. will they give you a card etc...
Do not just cash it, you don't want to have £3000 cash lying around! Banking it is the answer.
But yeah just be strong, it is your money. |

Three thousand pounds is a lot of money.
Open a Building Society account and then atleast you know your boyfriend willnot beable to gamble it away.
Unless you need the money quickly £3000 within a year of opening a Building society account will prabably be worth £3200.
since you have a bank account opening a separate Building Society Account should prove fairly straight forward and to gain access to that £3000 it will require your signature and not your boyfriends. |
