k2trf | I am 14 years old. I need a way of making money to start saving for a car.? |
I live in an area of Kentucky where not many others live. Here in Kentucky, we can get our driver's license at age 16. I only moved here over the summer, and am finding out all this now. Being that not too many others live here, doing odd jobs for them just isn't making enough money. I need a way of producing some decent profit. I am a freshman in high school, so my time is limited. I have a Windows XP home edition, and fast internet (I think DSL). What are good jobs I could do on the internet, because I don't see many other ways of making about $15,000 in two years. If anyone has other ideas, like starting businesses or something that you think would work, please tell me. I am desperate. |

First I would like to commend you for aspiring to save the money for your first car purchase yourself. Far too many adolescents rely on mommy and daddy to buy them their first vehicle. Good for you!
try a paper route, snow shoveling, raking leaves, mowing lawns, and things like that. Wash cars, clean attics and garages, the list goes on and on. |

my first car was a chepo, what makes you think that you need a 15,000$ car? try gettting a normal crappy job and get a normal teenage car. after you have a mode of transportation you will be able to get a better job and then earn more money and get a better car later. you have to see the BIGGER picture. My first car cost me about $200 and about $1000 in repairs. It lasted me 2 years and I sold it and got a much better car, it cost me $5500, and then later I financed a 2007 saturn vue. You have to start from the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. Not many kids get to just jump to the top. Besides, you will feel better about it in the long run. |

at age 14, there's no way you're going to make $15,000 in 2 yrs . 99% of 16 yr olds DO NOT have their own car. and the car insurance costs a fortune also. plus gas, oil changes, repairs and maintenance, annual inspections. Are your parents even going to let you drive at 16, never mind own a car? They might not feel it's worth it. If you want to start a business, go to the library and read books on starting a business - there are plenty of them out there - keep in mind, it usually costs some money to start any kind of business. |

Have you considered eBay? You can start your own business, and learn a lot at the same time. I bet you are an expert at something - start by selling what interests you, and sell the extras that you no longer want or need. Make sure that your parents are monitoring you, and keep your personal information private. You may want to visit the Small Business Administration for advice - they have experts that donate their time and expertise. I visited them before a trip to England, regarding shipping things back to the USA, and saved SO much time and money. My rule for growing my business is: when I make a dollar, I invest 75 cents back into the business for supplies and such, and use and/or save 25 cents - for example your car, or college, or whatever your future holds for you. Best of success in the new year! |

Bag boy at the grocery.
Shovelling snow? Kentucky doesn't get much does it?
Raking leaves? Yard work?
Make sure your folks know if you go door to door looking for yard work.
I think internet jobs are a scam.
If you're a big-time computer geek you could try your local "Shopper" the free newspapers everyone gets in rural areas that has advertising. Go to their office and see if they will let you work making up the paper for a few hours each week. It will put you in touch with the community because many of the opportunities funnel through there. |

For a first car, don't buy anything over $4,000. It will much easier to save up for and maintain. |

you're joking, aren't you? I've been around a while and I've never known of anyone buying their car right off like you are suggesting. How kids do it is to save up from their allowance, and their parents either pick up an old car for them for a song, or put a nice size deposit on a car (whether new or old...usually for guys they help them out with an old car so they can to lean to fix it...or a new car for a girl because usually the females learn other things). I don't know what you mean by desperate as I think you are overrating your situation. No person up to age 18 is desperate for anything. Anyway maybe you should just educate yourself the best you can, study hard, maybe take an extra course that could be considered an elective for credit for college. Usually when you go to buy a car you can't because you haven't (been able to because of your age) to build up credit so someone has to help you with the deposit (maybe a college graduation gift of money or car) or at the very least a second loan. Maybe you just didn't know how getting a car was done. But just think...gas for the car is expensive and will be getting more expensive. What would you do if you got a car without having graduated? buy a car and just look at it? no, you have to have a job to go to to be able to run that car and maintain it. Your best bet would be to educate yourself now so that (later) in time you can afford that car. |

I agree with Jessica K.
My sister is a stay at home mom and sells used books and CD's on Amazon.com. It takes a lot of work but she makes about $300 or more per week doing this.
You can find used books for little money at garage sales, flea markets, thrift shops, freecycle.org. etc. You need to research to see what books are worth buying to sell for a profit.
Also, what I have done is shop thrift for high end clothing and sell it on ebay. |

It is difficult to find a job that can make you have so much money for a car: you have 14 years old too. I don't know that tell you. In Italy (I'm Italian) we can drive only after 18 years old. |

Open a small Candy store right in your locker.Take note of what kids in your school are nuts about and stock it.Make a flayer.pass it out on the qt the management of the school might no like it but the risk is low low low it's not like your peddling drugs or something.Buy the goodies at Sam's club.Careful management of the funds and what you stock are key.Limit it to 5 items.Don't waist any of the money.A small profit of 5 to 6 dollars per day will add up.Summertime?Look for opportunities where there is a crowed ,doesn't have to be that big but a crowed.open a lemonade stand.Charge a buck a cup.Make a sign that tells why you want the money, leave a big jar for tip.people Will buy out of sheer admiration for your tenacity.I did this and some people drooped 5 bucks and didn't even take the drink. |

1) Think large for the long term, but think small in the beginning. Start your business by contacting people that you know ( friends, family, neighbors etc. ). Let these people know that you are in business, and explain to them what a convenient service you provide.
(2) Network your business as a fund-raiser. Contact local schools, churches, civic groups etc. who want to raise money for their organization and keep a percentage of sales as your profit.
(3) Take advantage of any gift giving occasion ( holidays, birthdays, engagements, graduations, etc.) Keep a log of all special occasions for your customers.
(4) Contact local business who having waiting areas (family doctor, pediatrician, dentist, beautician, mechanics etc.) This is an excellent opportunity for you to offer your service at little or no additional cost to the customer.
(5) Ask existing customers for referrals. Most businesses get their start this way. For example: Your beautician built his or her client base from referrals of existing customers. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertisement.
(6) Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to get a listing of businesses ( and their address / Phone Number) in your area. Write a letter of introduction, or use our suggested letter of introduction, to contact them. There may be a small fee to get this list.
(7) Contact large businesses in your area.
(8) Keep updates on new residents in your area. Write a letter to welcome them to the community and tell them about your service. Form a business relationship with a local company that deals with major purchases ( real estate brokers, car salesman ).
(9) Build relationships with your customers. Follow up with existing customers on a regular basis ( every 3 mos. ) . And there are NO problems. Hint: Customers follow up is crucial to your business. If you do not follow up, your credibility can be destroyed. If you only call your customers once a year (when it is time to renew ), they will be less likely to renew through you if there have been problems and you were not available to handle them throughout the year. |

Sell yourself. That or find a local store that needs help promoting and/or help starting up a website or something.
Also, don't set your standards that high. Your first car doesn't need to be worth 15,000 dollars. You can get a real decent car for 8,000 dollars at most. I only payed 4,000 for my first car. A first car is supposed to be pretty bad. After you start making enough money to afford a better car, sell that one and get a better used one. I got a used Honday at an auction for only 6,000 dollars. It's only 7 years old and in great condition. |

Well, it sounds like you are determined. I believe you will succeed. I'd suggest asking the friends of your parents about jobs. And then even when you have a job just keep your eyes and ears open for the next opportunity.
One thing that you could possibly do is write for money. At fourteen I think you'd qualify to write for a lot of contests that have cash prizes. Just be careful that the contests are real. There are a lot of fakes out there.
Also, you could write a book and make money that way. There is a process to getting a book published and the library would have things on that.
I'd suggest going to the library for ideas on how to make money, too.
I'd ask about any teenage millionaires to research. Then see what they did and do what they did in your own way.
Best of luck to ya. I'm excited for your future. |

Well You Could BabySit. That Helped Me Alot. If you babysat you could charge $3.50 an hour(per kid) and for a day maybe you could give a deal like $35.00 for 12 hours which would normaly be $42.00. Thats What I Would Do Hope This Helps! |

Mowing lawns, washing cars, and trimming hedges are good, but a lawn usually needs mowing only every two weeks, cutting hedges may occur only once a season, and washing a car in a non-urban setting can be far and in between. Ask around your neighborhood to do "odd jobs." This usually comes in handy and can not only be beneficiary , but also lasting quick pay from 'little old ladies' who cannot do things like they used to do...like reaching the top of their cabinets; going to the laundry...even if it is on another level of their home; hanging or taking down curtains; cleaning/ sweeping rugs; walking or bathing or feeding your neighbors' dogs and other pets, is good too. Helping the elderly is quite steady, too. |
